FS 3458 DMMs
« on: September 30, 2020, 11:10:30 pm »
If there's any interest, some stable 3458s that I've had for over a year could go to a new home...

I'm sure that I can't afford it, but how much it cost? Only to suffer...:-) Thanks

Everyone has an interest in the 3458A.  If you are serious post up details picts/info/pricing along with CAL72 and temp data.

Yes, please, put up some pics and prices.

While I am keenly interested, my budget and justification argument tell me I need to be dissuaded  ::)

My first try in a long time to attach pix...
The A/D drift is easy, I just check the 732B voltage.
The 732B runs in opposition to the eight 732As that I've collected over the years.
This herd is scanned by hand on a Data Proof 160 and read out on an old
Keithley 181 nVoltmeter. I keep a 9x9 matrix of the voltages to a uV, 0.1ppm.
The 4214 L&N 10Kohm is the other artifact needed for the 3458 tracking.
The hope was to get about $4K on fleabay.

Thanks for that.

Now I can crawl back into my little corner and huddle up to my 3478A a bit more comfortably.   ;D

That's a beautiful herd of voltage references... I can't afford the 3458A but I'm still hitting notify so I can watch my dreams be lived vicariously by others.

You have a very nice collection of metrology gear.

Please post some detail pictures of the 3458A that is for sale.
There are 3 kinds of people in this world, those who can count and those who can not.

I too lust for a 3458A.  But I can't justify $4k when I already have a 3456A.

The units all are very stable. eBay flippers buy drifty junkers and sell them for top $$$.
I did get one of these over a year ago and sure enough, bad A/D and bad A9 reference.
I'd rather sell them to volt-nuts here for less $$, since the 10% fleabay fee wouldn't apply.
Also, on fleabay, they would be listed as 'parts' machines, at avoid the scammers complaining
to get a refund. (sigh)

Is there a preferred way that folks here can buy equipment with the buyer and seller protected?
The fleabay 10% is a pretty hefty charge for this protection...

Paypal would give some protection,  but they do take a cut  but less than Ebay

I'll start putting them up on fleabay, I'm acts238willy seller name.

For folks here who are sick of flippers selling 3458s that they only
know how to turn on, buy from me and you can get drift data and
an 'eevblog warranty', covered by parts from my 2 lab mules.

3 weeks later, the first one's on fleabay.  It was an ex-IBM I believe.
It's listed as 'works and for parts' at $3985, my favorite steam locomotive.

Local sale... I mention a 'local sale' possibility in the ebay auction

$3500 if you pick it up.

I live in Montpelier, NW corner of Ohio.

The ebay auction title is....

HP Agilent 3458A Multimeter, works great, good A/D, for parts

I listed it 'for parts' so it wouldn't be returned with the good boards stripped out...

Sorry, but I don't quite understand that. Doesn't 'For Parts' usually mean - 'probably doesn't work at all'?

eBay has been very stringent against sellers - pretty much if the device has a single problem, however small, a buyer can claim false ad and eBay will intervene.

I never did such large $$$ sell on eBay, but with small parts (computer memory, for example) I used to create a short movie in a single shot that showed it working, its serial number and the packing process - in case someone claimed otherwise.

For parts    protects the seller against scammers.
I showed working pix to let legit buyers know that it works fine.
ebay takes 10% and paypal takes 3% right off the top,
and includes the price of shipping with the sale price.

Looks like $3300 for a volt-nut price now. ebay is really sad.

If I go $3800 on fleabay, they add taxes and shipping to the 10% fee, along with the gaypal 3%....
net, about $3300.

Yeah but if I'm a buyer, buying a $3-4K item 'for parts' that the seller claims in a side channel 'is actually working' sounds like a recipe for:

"item turns up with all the pcbs removed and buyer has no protection"

... which sounds like to much of a risk for me. Not that I really need another 3458a.
