Title: FS: Agilent 54622D 100Mhz Mixed Signal Oscilloscope $250 (1yr wrty, New battery)
Post by: humgar on June 03, 2025, 11:18:44 pm
I have a stock of Agilent 54622D oscilloscopes that I acquired years ago which I'd like to sell at or slightly below costs to hobbyists to claim space (I'm now surrounded by 13Ghz scopes and MSO7k+, DSOX 1.5Ghz, etc. Lol).

They are the most reliable, easy to use scopes I've used and serviced. If you don't abuse it, the only time I've seen this model die of natural causes is the CMOS/cal memory battery run dry, and I had a sample size in the order of dozens.

If you don't care about USB/Network connectivity and color screen, bells and whistles, etc and and just want a quick troubleshooting scope, 54600 series is the best. Boots up in around 3 seconds which is unbeatable given how modern scopes takes 20 seconds to a minute to boot (Agilent DSO5k~DSO7k), Rigol might take a minute.

The unit has built-in RS-232 (Serial) port for Agilent free software to talk to the scope, make screenshot, automate it, capture data to Excel spreadsheet, etc. If you want a GPIB module, I can add one for $50.

For $250 (hobbyists only, the price is not available to commercial customers), I'll rework the board for you to replace the soon to run out cal ram battery with a fresh one. It's a pain in the butt to wrestle it out (big ground plate, tough double sided foam adhesive) which beginners might rip the traces if they are not careful. 1 year of warranty is included at full price as I likely have replacement units.

Probes and pods are not included, nor pouch or manuals, aka just the bare minimum unit, but I can point you to some cheap source or I can sell them at cost for your convenience.

If you've contributed a lot in EEVblog and had done useful or interesting projects and looking for an upgrade, please send me a link of your work and you could have the scope for free as long as you pay all shipping + all overheads and rework the cal ram battery yourself at your own pace and accept there's no warranty.

If you are a beginner tight on budget, please let me know your situation and I'll see what I can do. The price is mostly for the trouble of handling a small transaction and shipping the scope. The easier you make it for me (like picking it up locally in SoCal, USA or not expecting me the offer any support or guarantees), the more flexible I'm on the price.

I also recently got very good DHL shipping discounts from USA to overseas destinations. Cheaper than the post office or pirateship.

Yeah, these are rock solid, incredibly user friendly scopes.  I have repaired and sold a bunch of them to get people into a GOOD budget scope on other forums.  For the same price, oddly.

Big bump.... BUY ONE!  You'll love it!  I'm out, but I will keep my 350MHZ version of this scope.  "Old reliable". :-+

The Cheap Chinese Crap ruined the price perception of 54600 series scopes, so are way undervalued. 54600 series so well designed that it's still the most distraction free yet powerful scopes you can have in 2025. Most basic use cases do not need to fluff in 'modern' (in the sense the RTOS is bloated) scopes that scarifice boot time and overcrowding the UI for less frequently used features. I'd say beginners have no good reason to pick up a Rigol when a proven 54600 series can be had for this cheap, unless they live in a tiny overcrowded and overpriced space in San Francisco. This scope provides the best user experience I can find to date.

I also sell 54642A/D (500Mhz) of this scope. I'm willing to give generous discounts to the hobbyists here if they DM me. What you have is likely a 54641A/D (350Mhz). Hardware-wise they are the same as 54642A/D but I never bothered to find the ID resistor for it since 54641s is less common and I have more 54642s.

I usually charge a base price to cover the troubles and hedge the warranty risks because in my experience, people don't end up with less questions and request for support (most of the time it's not my problem at all) just because I lowered the price. I rather charge an amount that I don't feel short-changed for labor in case if the buyer ask for help, than potentially leaving anybody unhappy by insisting on my contractual rights.

Could be a 54621D (60Mhz), 54641D (350Mhz) or 54642D (500Mhz). I have ALL models in this series

Hi, I have a 54622D with some jumpy encoders (Volts/Div,position, Time/Div). Any advice?

Yes, clean the encoders.  But this is NOT the right place to ask for service advice unless you plan to buy one of his scopes.

Dial the encoder each way like a thousand times and you'll start to see the glitchiness to improve.

Thanks. Normally this is the case but the 54622Ds I'm selling here are leftovers that I'm selling roughly at cost to help people out, so no biggie. The trick is to exercise the dial until the gunk loosened up instead of accumuatling on the surface. The longer the scope sits unused, the more likely you'll get glitchy dials.

This scope typically needs to have the cal ram battery reworked (it's a pain in the butt because it's soldered on and the sticky double sided tape makes removal miserable), and the shafts exercised before I ship. I do these prep work only for those who are paying the full price.

Yup!  These scopes LIKE to be used!

I have refurbished hundreds of these.
Although I DID always totally take them apart to fully clean everything anyway and install a quiet fan with rubber mounts.
These are may absolute favorite scopes, even though I have way faster Agilent color one's.

Any one on the fence....  BUY ONE!!!   :-+ :-+

The 350Mhz/500Mhz models run hot at the bottom. I've seen the ADC ceramic crack and discolored (the center 0V line will and become chaotic when it gets hot). I wouldn't mind turning on 100Mhz models on 24/7, but the 350Mhz/500Mhz models I'd only turn them on as needed. The heatsink is excellent but there's no direct fan blowing to it in the bottom layer. Just a tiny squirrel fan running slow in the ADC layer can carry the heat away very well.

Absolutely correct!   :-+  I still have my 350Mhz scope.  And yes, the little fan mod works great.

I still have more left. Hope these excellent scopes can find a good home. The price is mainly for the trouble preparing the unit and guaranteeing it.

Still have a few units left after a few took the offer. If you are a school or community college, I'm willing to consider a donation write-off.
