FS: DIY Calibration Devices (AC, DC OHMS)
« on: December 17, 2023, 11:42:52 pm »
I have designed, assembled & fanatically tested some useful calibration devices for validating digital multimeter functionality. I listed them on eBay under Seller: SQWARREL, but I am listing the links here for enthusiasts who might be interested:

10VDC Voltage Reference:   https://www.ebay.com/itm/285628491010
AC Sine Wave Generator:   https://www.ebay.com/itm/285612664177
OHMS Tester:   https://www.ebay.com/itm/285628490537
Complete DIY Cal Lab:   https://www.ebay.com/itm/285628493572

Happy to answer questions. Email: majorassburn@gmail.com
Thanks for looking.

Don't mean to discourage you, but I think this is wrong place to post / promote a DIY product like yours. If you search for transfer standards, you can see examples of what people here have built and shared. There's even a CAL club that lets people compare notes, so this forum is perhaps not your intended audience.

This forum (buy/sell/wanted) actually is the best place to post things for sale.

If you want to discuss the project at length, you can do so in the projects forum.

What I meant to say was that people on the eevblog forums tend to have expectations that differ from what OP is offering. In any case it's been discussed in other threads, e.g. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/metrology/affordable-reference-standards-to-have-on-hand-in-a-electronics-lab/

Do you really hand assemble these on perfboard?

Yes, my favorite email address is majorassburn@gmail.com which has a long, funny story behind it (for another time).
I do hand assemble these on perfboard because I have been selling a few here and there on eBay to owners of cheapie meters who want to verify them.
They aren't laboratory standards but they really work well for what they are intended to do.
For example, if you are a hobbyist, homeowner, handyman or student and you bought a cheapie Chinese DMM on Amazon and you just want to be sure that it is reading reasonably accurately, these devices help to get you there without spending hundreds of dollars on calibration services, etc.
Do my devices work better than the expensive standards and calibrators that pros use? Of course not. But, they do work well enough to let you know that your AC function is reading within 1/2 to 1% or so.
I welcome and appreciate all suggestions you guys may have and if you doubt these little buggers really work, buy one and check it out for yourself.  :scared:
Thanks.

Happy to answer questions.

What is your device adjusted against (i.e. type and its calibration status)?

How long is the burn-in period?

What is the guaranteed 90 day and 1 year performance? Under what conditions, e.g. shock, temperature, power cycling?
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

i would say  in all of this

it's a matter of how you present your sale,  even with DIY projects  or professional ones  etc ... unless you are a power seller, and some in the past have been kicked out

if this respect the eevblog rules,  why not    if once again it is well said / defined and declared at the start ???

the op did put DIY  ....

but expectations ....
