NEWARK: Sale on many Tenma brand meters
« on: August 28, 2021, 12:37:35 am »
Just a heads up that Newark (US & Canada, at least) have a bunch of their Tenma branded meters on sale.

I'm posting this because one in particular, the 72-10415 (rebranded UNI-T UT61E), is heavily discounted. In fact, it's selling for a little over $55 (USD) on the US site, which is similar to what the 61E sells for on eBay.

The 10415 differs from the 61E in that is has a butterscotch sweater (instead of red) and far beefier input components: fatter PTCs (3x), 4x MOVs and 1,000V fuses (1x 3AG & 1x 5AG). Silkscreening under the input jacks reflects the fuse upgrade. The meter is otherwise identical to the UNI-T, right down to the lack of a backlight.

This is a great deal for anyone interested in a 61E with "big-boy" inputs.  :box:

EDIT: Attached an image showing the differences between the two models. (Note: These images aren't mine.)

Those pictures may be a bit misleading.

Uni-T puts different parts in their meters for different markets. The EU version tends to have more and/or bigger MOV's then the version you order directly from china.

The EU version
Yeah, the "GS" models... which are about as common as hen's teeth.

And unless things have changed recently, the GS's PTCs are the same as the "base"/non-GS Uni-T's, and the fuses are 600V, not 1000V like in the Tenma.

When Newark code punched into Element14
In Australia I get ~$176 AUD price.  Incl gst 10%

This is what peeves me off in Arsetralia! Slower,  More costly , less range availability and 10 years behind the rest of the world.  Did I mention snakes……I hate snakes!    Grrrrrr

I am torn about this $112 meter. The feel of it is subpar compared to the Brymen  meters.  Here i compare it to the Greenlee DM-860 (a $330 meter).
The range selector seems sloppy with a lot of movement before switching over to the next detent. The Brymen has no slop. The case feels light and hollow. The rubber is overmolded to the case, giving very little protection in my mind versus the separate boot on the Brymen. Overall I am sure its a fine meter for its price.

never understand folks who bougth an item and start complains, comparing to similar at four times more expensive, rather with same price-bracket.

but ,  if I purchased CAD$561 +13% tax that thingi: https://canada.newark.com/tenma/72-13570/digital-multimeter-true-rms-10a/dp/56AC4693
and it appears CAD$200 (hope tax slipped away :) ) version of Uni-T UT71C (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001664658356.html)  - then i think i have a right to curse it ..

I can complain all I want - that is  due to freedom that we have.  Plus someone might find various opinions interesting.
The uni-t 171A  goes for $160 ....$200 range  and just because Newark is dumping these at a discount we see a better price.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001209242272.html?src=google&src=google&albch=shopping&acnt=708-803-3821&slnk=&plac=&mtctp=&albbt=Google_7_shopping&albagn=888888&isSmbAutoCall=false&needSmbHouyi=false&albcp=9594035441&albag=102695258807&trgt=1291093751210&crea=en4001209242272&netw=u&device=c&albpg=1291093751210&albpd=en4001209242272&gclid=CjwKCAjw-ZCKBhBkEiwAM4qfF1FQFRj7qTv02IhuTiydeA6ivFY4RY1QPS0Nuzxj2cnsWEm0zQA5QBoCifkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&aff_fcid=01e6e65123c6456fa36ffc0a7856ddab-1631922113339-02229-UneMJZVf&aff_fsk=UneMJZVf&aff_platform=aaf&sk=UneMJZVf&aff_trace_key=01e6e65123c6456fa36ffc0a7856ddab-1631922113339-02229-UneMJZVf&terminal_id=e796f71846f24fd7bfd19a59cd4b86cf

BTW I got the Greenlee DM-860 for about $130 on ebay  so that's why I am comparing them . Also they are both  rated about the  same precision so I felt its a good compare. Either way I said  the Uni -T is probably fine for $112  but  the built is not  particularly  robust (switch and  case).  Just my opinion which I have a right to have.
If I was starting into the hobby and only had $120 to spend it would be a fine purchase that I would be happy which not having anything else to compare.
Just saying there is a lot better stuff out there.

EEVblog 786 is a much better buy  but for a $185  price tag.

Tme which ships real fast  and has the BM 869S for $240 and may other meters (BM 257 for $125)

Here is what  I mean buy the case and switch quality.

I was also looking for a decent clamp meter. Based on the promo mentioned here I got the 72-7228 which seems to be a discontinued UT208 made by Uni -T  . The meter measures very well in the DC range  - no issue from  1A all the way to 25A. The low range was my primary  area of interest and occasionally up to 350A DC.  Signal jumps around the about +/-0.05A but reading is spot on my unit. The unit itself is really big and so are the clamps . It can take up to 55mm wire.  1000MCM wire is only 33mm diameter and is rated to 540A in Aluminum and 1000A in copper. The meter can defiantly handle wires sizes  rated for 1000A  from a mechanical perspective. I think the meter is intended for hobby use and will be fine for that .
