Title: Rigol's Canadian Distributor wants me to pay $90 for shipping. Other options?
Post by: Truant19 on December 13, 2012, 12:25:38 am
Hey Guys,

I am sure you are all sick of the oscilloscope questions, but I need some help.

I came home today hoping to order a scope after some research, the Rigol DS1052E, and they (the Canadian distributor TMetrix) quoted me at $90 for shipping and refused to lower it. Since the American site has $15 shipping AND a $30 discount for completing an advertising survey, there is just no way I'm going to spend $105 more than what is advertised.

I tried looking on Ebay for anything, but all the DS1052Es are more quite a bit more expensive than the site, and all come from China. The only competitively priced scopes, were some that don't seem to exist, DS1072U. I can't find any info on it from a decent source.

It's really frustrating when I want to give a company money but since I live 15 minutes across an invisible line I'm expected to pay almost 50% more.

So, Canadians, where did you buy your scopes? Is there any outlets in southern BC or Washington (Spokane area)? I really don't want to buy a mystery scope from China off ebay.

Try Saelig they have free shipping and they are located in NY. There is a link on Dave's main site.

Sadly, they no longer sell the model, though even if they did they are charging $80 for shipping to Canada.

If you search for DS1000U you will find Rigol's Chinese site had a page for it here:
http://www.rigol.com/prodserv/DS1000U/ (http://www.rigol.com/prodserv/DS1000U/)

I say "had" because that page now seems to have disappeared. Nevertheless if you Google that URL you can find the cached version (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Xc-28tCtsBUJ:http://www.rigol.com/prodserv/DS1000U/%2Bsite:rigol.com+DS1000U&hl=en&safe=off&gbv=1&ct=clnk), which does show a DS1072U along with a Chinese datasheet for it:

All shipped. First one will likely be taxed, ali-x/dx could take longer + questionable warranty, but low chance of tax.

Ciao Truant
I think you are near me in Canada also, I got a Rigol from Tequipment with free shipping and ship to place near the boarder & then went and picked it up.  I am also thinking of another order to Tequipment with free shipping, Tequipment states free shipping for your DS1052E also,  Keep watching the US exchange rate. I think $Can will go up :).  At 1st  I was also thinking of the DS1052E but went for the DS2072, I like it.  .  Many of the Canadian boarder crossings have a store that does mail drops,  I pay $3 per parcel..   Another trick is to add an addition shipping address to your credit card , I added the USA mail drop address to my Canadian Master Card to avoid shipping fraud checks.
PS  Go Smokies Go

Hi;
  I bought mine from saelig.

I just went to their site, and they do not sell it any more.
Instead they sell the DS1102E for $399.
http://www.saelig.com/product/PSPC017.htm (http://www.saelig.com/product/PSPC017.htm)

SO a "factory hacked" scope for the same price that I paid for a 1052e.

I ended up doing a similar thing. I got it mailed to this store just across the border and I am going to go pick it up next week. I hope I don't get charged to much at the border.

My Rigol took more than a week. Watch your Tracking number, and make sure parcel is there .
Also make sure you tell usa and Can. custom it is for Personal use.
Make sure you bring Receipt printout,
fees at the Can .Customs will just be 12% HST , but on the Canadian amount.
With $1can=$1.02US , your fees should be around $42, Have fun !
PS is that Hardware Store? :)

You should cancel the order, because it does not costs that much to ship a Rigol 1052E digital oscilloscope.  You might try Amazon dot com store website of Dave's EEVBLOG.  That should be easier.

I bought a DS1102E and a DG1022 directly from Rigolna.com the cost was $42ea shipping to Canada, duty ended up being around $70 for each unit, via USPS.

As per the OP's shipping cost, the $90 covers shipping direct from Rigol NA, plus the duty so you are not going to pay that when it comes in. The issue I had and the reason I bought directly from Rigol was the shipping time, they told me 3 weeks, Rignol only took a week. Also according to the local distributors documentation they cover the CSA certification and that's covered in the cost. Just remember with out the CSA coverage you can't leave the unit plugged in unattended, or your insurance will not cover your home if the device starts a fire.

I will be ordering a DM3068 dmm in the new year and may just order it directly from the local Canadian deal to see how that works.

PS the DG1022 is for sale, brand new :)

Sadly, they no longer sell the model, though even if they did they are charging $80 for shipping to Canada.

But they sell the DS1102E though, which has better specs for the same price the DS1052E was selling at before. They have good customer service and you can call them to find out exactly what cost of shipping to Canada includes. Maybe it includes import duties, taxes and customs fees that you may have to pay separately if you purchase through other channels?
