Special Offer to EEVblog Forum Members
« on: October 16, 2017, 11:33:19 am »
*** Admin, if this is not permitted on here, please delete. ***

Dear All,

I know that there are EEVblog forum members all over the world, certainly many from outside of the UK where we are based.

I acknowledge too that as our products are made in the UK then they're not cheap to start with. Airmail costs for our gear also adds a lot to the price of our products.

So just now, I've setup a discount code for EEVblog forum members to use on our website. It works for all orders over £30 and provides a 20% discount on all the products in your shopping cart.

Please note that this is a very limited time offer (stock dependent) and can end without notice.

Use code: EEVBLOG20

Best regards,

Jez Siddons

It would help to add a short list with the type of products you sell. I for one have never heard of your company.

Very nice small tools, they have been discussed in some threads here before:

also a couple of good review videos on them:

Not sure if I should ask here, apologizes for that.

I'd love to buy your ESR meter, but there a few things I miss.

1) why they don't let choose arbitrary frequency and/or do sweep? Like, ESR70 supports only "industry standard 100kHz". But LCR45 doesn't even support 100kHz, but supports 200kHz....
2) Looks like none of them can show losses or dissipation factor directly (I don't see these on photos).
3) Having cap discharge on LCR45 would be great...
4) PC connection.

Is it possible to add these features? I can be your beta-tester  :D

You are absolutely right to ask here and thank you for your comments.

I'll discuss these with my colleagues.

In the meantime, my immediate thoughts are as follows:

The ESR70 is primarily aimed at the testing of electrolytics where ESR is usually the important factor. For that reason, the ESR70 is designed to cope with charged caps and the protection mechanisms for providing that protection don't influence the measurements of, usually, large value capacitances. The LCR40/45 however are designed to measure down to much lower values (<1pF) and the influence of protection electronics that could cope with big charged capacitors can be quite significant. Even my £1500 Hameg HM8118 bridge has a warning about not connecting to charged capacitors.

Going back to the ESR70. The test frequency of 100kHz is actually not that important because ESR itself is not very frequency dependent. The ESR70 effectively isolates the ESR "bit" of the capacitor's characteristic by measuring the voltage change that occurs in sync with the 100kHz toggling constant current generator. That means that other capacitor characteristics such as leakage and dielectric absorption won't influence the ESR reading. This is not the case when measuring the complex impedance of the capacitor, all manner of characteristics can then influence the "real" part of the complex impedance and it's not just the ESR.

Anyway, I probably digressed a little there. I take on board your feedback and we'll look into future enhancements. A swept arbitrary frequency and PC connection on the LCR would be lovely...

Regards,
Jez

FWIW, I checked all the US distributor pricing on a DCA75, and even after adding shipping, it's still less expensive to buy directly from Peak Atlas using the discount.  :-+ And it's more convenient than using a breakout curve tracing board with an oscilloscope.

So now I just have to make up my feeble mind.  :o  :-DD

And if I didn't already have an LCR meter (DER DE-5000), I'd be looking really hard at the ESR70+ too.

I have the LCR45, ESR70, SCA75, SCR100 and ZEN50 (+ the Network Cable Analys(z)er) and the cases.   Wish I knew about the discount before!

Still I use each of them quite often, especially the ESR70.

Perhaps its time to get a pack of the (quite expensive) Identifed Terminators for the Network tool.

Would be nice if we could upgrade these devices our self in the event of new firmware though, I guess most are PIC based, and many of us already have tools for that.
If there have been updates that is.

I know, I have it, but it's only that one.
But not the Zen50 for instance, mine have R1.2, and the latest is 1.4, and you need to send it in... Maybe due to the recalibration though?

Is there any plans for a beefed up DCA75? It looks really useful but the range of voltage and currents seem limited for some tests.

Jeremy,
For the ESR 70:
What is the difference between Firmware 4.7 and 4.9? It would be nice to have a page with the firmware changes.
For the DCA 75
Back in April I requested if it was possible to make changes in the firmware to measure JFETs with very low IDSS. As it stands now, it doesn't recognize the JFETs. I tried to do it manually as you suggested but it didn't work. Are you working on a solution?
Thank you  :)

Peak are a well known producer of some very neat compact test equipments in the UK. The have been around for many years and I am pleased to see a UK based company providing such equipment. It is not an easy market in which to sell, thanks to cheap Chinese test equipment.

I own the DCA55,DCA75 and ESR70. All three are excellent value for money and perform very well. Another important factor when buying equipment from Peak is their after sales support. I offer the following example of what you can expect ......

I purchased a used DCA55 that was faulty. The fault was likely due to user abuse. I advised Peak of the history of the unit and requested any information that they could share on the meaning of a displayed fault code. I was hoping to narrow down what part of the unit was failing the self test or at least identifying that the unit was scrap due to a fried PIC chip.

I received support responses from both Peak Customer Support and Jez himself.

The error code was common to several possible failures but Peak provided me with a repair note made available to those owners wishing to attempt their own repairs. I was also offered repair at very reasonable cost by Peak. Jez indicated that if the PIC was fried, I could contact him to obtain a replacement.

I checked the contents of the DIY repair guidance written by Peak and it was clear that abuse of the input could destroy the input protection TVS diodes and some common IC's. It was advised to fit new SMD TVS diodes and replace the IC's in a stated order. I replaced the diodes and the first IC. The unit was returned to full functionality at this point. I went ahead and replaced the other IC's as well as they may have suffered stress during the abuse event. Thankfully the PIC chip is fine and does not need to be replaced. The DCA55 is providing excellent back-up service to my DCA75.

In a previous conversation on this forum with Jez, it was highlighted that the cases that Peak use are novel, but they sit flat on the bench when a tilted attitude would be better for ease of reading the display. Jez took this constructive criticism and designed a really neat desk stand that could be 3D printed. The stand is a lovely solid design and not just a 'prop' or 'bale' type. Jez released the 3D build file to all for free as a service to his customers. I believe the stand is available on the Peak web site fro free download. I asked Jez if I could purchase a stand from him as I did not have a working 3D printer at the time. This gentleman sent me a stand free of charge ! Please do not inundate him asking for freebies, he was just being very kind and generous to me.

So in precis, Peak stand by their product and offer excellent customer support even when you tell them you purchased a unit known to be faulty ! I get the strong feeling that Jez and his team like to be helpful where possible and will help those users of their excellent equipment to maintain it. I cannot imagine a Chinese manufacturer of similar equipment being so helpful somehow.

I also own some other brands of ESR meter and component tester. I was please to be able to buy British though and support a 'local' company that produces some innovative products. Jez is a very clever designer and I fully endorse both his products and his excellent positive attitude to customer support.

I will see what other kit Peak have that I can add to my test bench  :)

This thread is worth a read. It is where Jez enters the discussion on his products and provides the design for the bench stand. I include the 3D printing file here as well.

I just stumbled over this thread today, and feared I was late to the party (wouldn't be the first time that had happened). Luckily, the code still works. One DCA75 ordered.
I have been looking at it a couple of times earlier, but succesfully resisted the temptation. But this offer I couldn't refuse  ;D

Nice to know that Atlas offers this discount :) sadly I don't have the money to grab a ESR right now :( I am waiting for a chance to get one for quite a while after using my LCR40 (which is broken...) with much enjoyment for some years now. Maybe the discount will be available in a few month when I have the money.
Grab one if you can, they are very nice little meters.

Ysjoelfir,

If your LCR40 has failed, I suggest you contact Jez at Peak. He is a very helpful chap who will help you if he is able. In my case he helped me repair a DCA55. Most components used are common parts and available cheaply. Even if the PIC has died, it is likely Jez can help with the supply of a replacement.

I can handle anything except temptation.........

I've just purchased:

ATPK3 - Atlas Pro Pack - LCR45 + DCA75 + Case
ESR70 - Atlas ESR PLUS - Equivalent Series Resistance Meter
ZEN50 - Atlas ZEN Zener Diode Analyser

and saved £55 using the code.  I did have £400ish for a DMM but I've bought a couple of PM2525s so now I have enough for these too.

Just went to order ATPK3 and the code (EEVBLOG20) has expired.

The specified coupon code expired on 31/01/2018.

Maybe a new code will be issued. It would be worth contacting the OP and asking as he is a very approachable and friendly chap  ;)

I have to say, I travel to a lot of various sites, and these little testers are a god send for quick diagnosis of stuff...... no need to lug heavy gear in anymore unless I really need to.........I have the whole range of them velcro'd to a piece of 4 x 1 with a handle at one end and just lug them in and lean them against the wall and I have a full complement of test gear with me ! ........sure beats the trolley with full size gear for a quick look at something that can't be easily moved to the lab.

Regarding DCA75 Pro Semiconductor Analyser

"[...]really saves time with identifying faulty components[...]"

Looks neat, also the software. But how it will identify that fried silicon is a bit beyond me :P

You look for a component with the same markings, or use, on the board that is not fried and test that  :P

If there is no duplication on the board, a component analyser is of little use in that exact scenario.

I think it supposed to be read "identifying which components are faulty", assuming you know how they are supposed to behave.

To PeakAtlas:
Thanks for this most generous offer.

I've wanted an ESR meter for ages but couldn't afford one until your offer. I ordered ESR70 straight away.

To everyone else:
This little meter is fantastic, even better than the adverts make out!
I've found it to be thoughtfully designed, easy to use and surprisingly revealing.
I recommend it to all hobbyists.

Going off topic & following up on the suggestion that Peak may see my message here... (i hope that's OK). iI,ve made a call-out for assistance with my LCR40. This is a bit of a repost therefore, so apologies if it's out of order to do so...

I've directly invested over the years in all of Peak's test units (but not their Ethernet unit as yet) including a lot of spare, various interconnects etc (i endorse them as being of quite a reasonable quality).

I admit the units don't get a lot of use but they are damn handy when yuh need 'em!

Recently went to use the LCR40 and noted the LCD wasn't looking too happy as if contrast has shifted. The unit appears to be operating OK but it can be a bit hard to read that display sometimes especially if i'm doing a multiple run on some parts during a measuring session and its not set on a perfect angle in incident lighting.

I have the LCR45 to hand of course so not a huge issue with things but i'd like to sort the LCR40.

I acknowledge that Peak offer a set service-repair but since i'm in New Zealand i'm just wondering if there's anyone else who has seen such an issue before i commit to sending the unit across the other side the world for something that's kind of trivial....

The unit  boot message: @ R3.02 #59975 Cal due Oct 2012.

Hi Pete,

Sorry I hadn't seen your posts before, I'm not always here, but pop in every now and then.

Yes, we've seen this issue on some of our LCD modules before, in fairly small numbers thankfully, but it is certainly a known problem that our LCD supplier have acknowledged.

Although your LCR is out of it's 2 year warranty period, we're happy to sort out the rectification of this free of charge.

If you wish, you can send your LCR40 to us here in the UK, or if you prefer, we can send you a replacement LCD module (if that's the case them please PM me your postal address).

If you do wish to send your LCR40 to us then please ensure that the outside of the package is clearly marked with "Inward Processing Relief - Item return to factory for repair" to help reduce the possibility of it attracting duty charges. Our address is as follows:

Repairs Dept - Peak Electronic Design Ltd
Atlas House, 2 Kiln Lane,
Harpur Hill Business Park
Buxton, Derbyshire
SK17 9JL, UK

I hope that helps you. Let me know if you have any further queries.

All the best,

Jez

Hello,

I use ATLAS ESR70 and I am very happy about this device. I mainly use this for Piezo Injectors capacitance check. Your device works at 100 KHZ. For my work I only need 1 KHZ. Is there a possibility to change the frequency at this device?

Thank you, Arunas

Hello folks,

I just tried to buy DCA75 pro, but I found the discount code is no more valid, is this real? :palm:

By the way, dear PeakAtlas, may I ask what is the difference between certificated version and normal version?
Specifically, what calibrations have been performed?

Thanks!

Just recently started repairing electronics again, after 20+ years of doing other things. I did it to repair some failed electronics I own. But my interest got peaked again, so I decided to get into this again. A couple of days ago, I happened to find the test equipment DCA55 and ESR70.

Having found this thread, I had a look at peakelec.co.uk and was going to order both the DCA55, ESR70 and the LCR40, but, unfortunately, I can confirm that the coupon code does not work anymore.

Now that I'm not in a hurry to order before the discount code expires, I need to think a bit more. I would really have use of the ESR70 to test capacitors. The other two would be fun to have, but not sure how much I really need them.

Revive an old post to try to reach Mr Peak Atlas.  Last round of the promo, I bought an SCR tester.
Time to buy a few more Peak testers if there is a good deal.  Looking at DCA75 and ESR70.  I am using alternatives now.

Send him a PM. He is a really nice chap and I feel sure he will help you :)

If you write to Jez via the Peak web site, it will likely get to him as well :)

I just purchased a used Atlas SCR tester Mk2 on eBay. I could not justify a buying a new one but £35 was great for such a unit. I already own the DCA75 and ESR70. Both are excellent units and well worth having  :-+

Buying merchandise for export to the US do they waive the value added tax? For example LCR40  price says £86.10  (£71.75 ex VAT)
On very rare occasions, you might notice an odor or see a puff of smoke or sparks vent from your product.

Just a quick message to say that this discount code has been renewed and is now active.

For 20% discount on any orders of £30 or more, use the code EEVBLOG20 during checkout.

To make sure you get the opportunity to enter the code, don't use the "Checkout with PayPal" button. You can still select PayPal later on for your payment method :)

Please note that worlwide postal systems are currently very slow, the UK is particularly bad at the moment. All international parcels are sent by Insured Airmail, but that doesn't guarantee a delivery timescale. All UK parcels are insured too, again times are very variable. We do however aim to despatch all orders within 1 working day.

Orders can be placed here https://www.peakelec.co.uk

Don't hesitate to contact me using the email address on our Contact page on our website if you have any questions at all.

All the best for Christmas and the New Year all  :)

These Peak testers are great and they have a brilliant RTB out of warranty repair service.  I was fixing an amp and the device stopped working.  Obviously some residual voltage in a cap so my fault but they have this RTB warranty where you just send it back and they repair it for a quite reasonable FIXED fee of £14-33 (less the discount!).  They can also supply replacement cases/leads/fronts etc at the same time.  The unit comes back calibrated (no cert) and updated.

I like them so much I have designed a wall bracket to store them.  It is available on THINGYVERSE and there are brackets for TWO or FOUR Atlas devices so you can arrange them however best fits your workshop.
