WTB: Geiger or scintillation probe
« on: November 01, 2020, 09:39:21 pm »
Hi!

I'm on the lookout for a geiger-müller probe or scintillation probe to upgrade from my rather insensitive ones, anyone have anything good lying around?

-GM probe should be fairly sensitive, but all types are of interest
-Any scintillation probe has interest!

note: Not currently lookin for lose GM tubes or PMT's, looking for complete assemblies.

I'm in Denmark/ EU but I don't think shipping is too bad.

Thanks for looking

If you do get around to bare GM tubes, there are lots of former Soviet Pancake style tubes available on ebay from Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

These have Mica end windows and decent Beta sensitivity.
Best Regards, Chris

I think that might be what I end up doing as well, I was just hoping to find a ready-made probe that was a bit more ruggedized than what I can concoct.

That does look rather nice, the thing is, the mica window soviet geiger tubes has shot up in price to a level where they're not much cheaper than getting a canberra or ludlum probe off of ebay, and I don't think there's much doubt that the quality of the tubes are better.

I just picked up a 4-pack of what looks to be 2" scintillation detectors for 50$!
eBay auction: #273768107135

Even if only half works I'll be content with that. They're side-well counters, so they might not be brilliant for spectroscopy, but probably not unusable.

Yes, sadly a lot of the Soviet stuff has climbed steeply in price as people have become aware of what's out there, and the sellers have responded quickly to the change in demand.

It looks as if you did well there.  :)

Best Regards, Chris
