Title: UV Eraser for EPROM'S wanted Melbourne, AU
Post by: sae on May 20, 2019, 11:20:06 pm
Looking for a sturdy eraser with timer that can hold 10 or so eproms.
Also would be interested in a stand alone programmer suitable for
old school proms.

Buy a sterilization UV lamp(easy to find) and a regular wall outlet timer. It'll be cheaper.

Cheapo fleabay units erasers available  Those small units would hold close to qty10, 32 pin CDIP

As for programmer...depends upon what EPROM but the TL866 probably does it.

You could also just leave them outside in the sun.
Takes a bit longer, but there is no limit to how many you can erase at a time.

Sun takes ages, until fully deleted. I tried it once for fun and it didn't even flip a bit after 2 days or so during summer at like 500m elevation.

Silicon needs like 4.6eV or more to get it's electrons removed, which equates to 270nm or less.
Due to atmosphere, there is very little light below 350nm, so very little light capable of erasing EPROMs.

Maybe it works a little better if you live like on top of a mountain, but any cheap UV disinfection lamp with starter electronics from broken fluorescent lamp does it like a 1000 times faster.
Title: Kmart A$5 UV phone sterilizer, Was: Re: UV Eraser for EPROM'S wanted MelbourneU

Since I'm in Melbourne and I'm asking about eprom erasing I'll resurrect this old thread.

I was in Kmart (Australia) today and they had UV phone sterilizers discounted to A$5 and they claimed to have UVC tubes. I am going to assume Kmart would have verified they weren't selling a fake device that seems so common online last year. The one they sell does look similar to some of the fakes if I look at a few YT vids.

Has anyone tried erasing an eprom in this Kmart device? I surely can't be the only person who thought of it.

Sun takes ages, until fully deleted.

37 corpses of dead electronic boards were laying abandoned outside a warehouse until an american dude cared for them to sell on eBay. They have a classic 27C512 UV-EPROM chip, for weird reason they didn't have the protective label and got exposed to rain and sun rays for months.

I think I will never get a job as a "necromancer" as I only managed to resurrect 5 lucky boards (1), but funny thing is the sun did a great job since all 37 corpses were found with the UV-EPROM completely cleaned.

5/37 looks like 13.5% voodoo resurrection powers
37/37 looks 100% sun UV-EPROM erasing powers

Find a UV Phone Sanitizer people are giving them away free or next to nothing and they work.

I brought a few of the kmart ones they were further marked down to $2.50 each. They are larger than expected which is good. Easily get two roms each side directly facing either lamp, or a dozen facing up. If facing up though you could probably add some shiny aluminum foil to the underside of the lid to improve exposure.

They are timed for 5 mins, have lid detection and audio prompts. This one didn't seem as obnoxious as the video portrays (also has no internal leds). But looks like the case unscrews to disable or muffle it. I picked up extras as spare bulbs are handy.

My roms are packed away and I'm not in a hurry to search for them but I expect one or two cycles would be plenty if you placed them right up to the bulbs. It also is cheap enough to diy into another enclosure or stack the bulbs if needed. The enclosure itself could be repurposed.

There is a residual smell of ozone so I assume it's covering at least 160–240nm.

The only thing on that list which will work is the phone steriliser. Most UV LEDs, along with all bug zappers and nail curing lights produce UVA, which is too longer wavelength to erase an EPROM.

a good programmer is DataMan Pro. Using one for over 10 years now - never had problems and does a many many many programmable, eeprom and so on.
