(Found) WTB - Anyone have a spare HP side handle
« on: December 30, 2023, 07:40:23 pm »
I snapped the handle off the right side of my 8567A trying to move it. If anyone has a spare laying around they’re willing to part with I’ll pay a reasonable price. See pic below.

Common fate with HP handles and those die cast aluminum front frames ;-/

Looking for some 3U front frames myself, too. TIG welding seems like a nightmare.

You can take the easy way out and try brazing.

Never heard of brazing aluminum.  Sounds more tricky than my skill supports.  Anyway, TIG or brazing would never look factory and likely worse than just leaving it broken off.

Take a look through this repair I did a few years ago now on a HP 740B handle. Was done at the time with a $6 butane torch. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/hewlett-packard-740b-dc-standard-digital-voltmeter-(and-740a)/msg1419955/#msg1419955

The Key is really prep, pre and post heating. Even owning a good Tig welder I would still give this a go first with the now better Propane torch I own.

Impressive work.  I don't think I could get a repair that looked that good with sufficient penetration to retain any usable strength.  Nonetheless, I may have a replacement on the way and might try to make the repair.

Let me know if all that doesn't pan out, I have a set here that I think is correct.  I'll need to make sure I don't have an intended home for them before letting them go, but I can't think of any hulking HP projects hanging about without handles at the moment.

A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

I knew you'd enjoy that.

I do have a set of handles as well, but they are presently attached to the operational 8656B - and I'm not inclined to part them out.  The parts unit only came with 1 handle, so I'm happy for that to find a home with a mate.

You don't need flux when using the Bernzomatic brazing rods. Harbour freight sells similar (no flux) aluminium brazing rods which work equally well. I have used both. But it is not an easy process to master (at least with the butane torch I have). I'd recommend to grind down the edges so you end up with a 30 (2x 15) degree V shape that gets filled.
