(Withdrawn) WTB - Empty Tektronix MDO3k Modules..
« on: January 14, 2020, 07:53:17 pm »
Looks like this is not possible - left for informational purposes.

If anyone has transferred their license to their Tektronix MDO3k and has little use for their module.. I would be interested. I have an MDO3k that has MSO,SA and AFG licenses on it, but I would like to move them off. Anyone have one of them? (Can't pay too much.. since I'm not 100% sure one can mix and match the modules)

PM me. thanks

SA can’t be transferred, it’s a one way one time process.

Not sure about the others...

Wow, I did not know that..

I also had a MDO3BND (application) and that can go back and forth no problem. I thought the entire point was for modules to be moved around. (vs. entering a code.. that is permanent and listed differently on the scope). Are you 100% sure about SA?

I understand.. And thanks for your help.

I was hoping to legally sell valid licenses.. but it seems that is not possible once installed..  Tektronix! (Said like "Newman")

You can build your own modules apparently:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/how-to-hack-app-modules-on-mdo4000b/
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/mdo3000-hacking/

If you want to go that route.

No that doesn’t work with MDO scopes. MSO and DPO yes, but not MDO scopes

Absolutely 100% sure. I have several used MDO3SA modules you can have for $20 each shipped if you don’t believe me!

The SA modules does not have the standard EEPROM - they have the encryption EEPROM as far as I remember.

As far as I remember the "very early / original" MDO3BND could transfer in and out - but later versions use the crypto eeprom and is therefore one-way transfer only.

So you might be able to transfer it off. But it requires you to have a non-crypto MDO3BND destination for it. I think the old style just replace the first letter of product code on installation EEPROM with a "#" - and to re-enable it you just rename it back like on some of the other Tek stuff.

But the SA and the function generator was as far as I know never available without the crypto eeprom - so those you can not switch out again - and they can only be transferred - and not used "inserted only"

You can try and read the EEPROM on the module - if it comes back as all 0xFF it is a crypto eeprom.

But my MD0 is about 1500 miles away so can't check right now. I actually have both a BND and an SA "spare" where I have absolutely no idea if licences have been transferred out. That is the big annoyance with the crypto sticks....

All the MDO modules use the crypto scheme. But some options (SA, MDO and AFG) are one way and one time transfer, and some options (BND etc) can be moved backwards and forwards.

You can find out if a SA, AFG or MDO module has been used. Try moving the licence to an empty scope and if there is no licence on the module it will throw an error. If there is a licence on it you will be asked to confirm before doing the one time transfer, just cancel at that point.

I think this is the correct statement. I think BND is always moveable.. and ALL are encrypted.. and I don't think anyone has compromised the scheme..  PM if you know otherwise :)
