WTB: Manual Wire Wrapping Tools and Wire Wrapping Wire
« on: June 15, 2024, 04:05:46 am »
Howdy,
I'm looking to get some manual tools for wire wrapping and some of the wire for it.  I don't really now where to start, or what exactly I need for this, but I have some stuff that needs repair in which this is probably the best way to go about it since that was the original manufacturing method used (probably for customization)

Keywords are 30AWG Kynar silver
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
Glider pilot's aphorism: "there is no substitute for span". Retort: "There is a substitute: skill+imagination. But you can buy span".

Minimal tool is WSU-30M.
Price varies widely but I have had no problem with the cheaper ones, which may be clones.

The 'M' stands for modified wrap. A standard wrap only puts the wire around the post. A modified wrap puts a turn of insulated wire at the end, creating a strain relief and reducing the possibility of shorts. Highly recommended.

ALWAYS strip the wire such that the strip blade is pulled tight against the tool shaft. It will snap if pulled away from the shaft.

Next step up is separate strip, wrap and unwrap tools. A lot of wire strippers can't handle the narrow slipper tefzel insulation. Get a tool made specifically for wrapping wire.  Tbh you can use the wrapping part of the WSU-30M perfectly well for a moderate number of joints and even the stripper is quite good. The unwrapper is a bit less reliable.

Next is powered wrap. A delight to use but the cut-strip-wrap bits are expensive and wear quite quickly. The electric or pneumatic tools themselves are widely available secondhand, it's the bits you'll struggle with.

Also tefzel, an alternate to kynar insulation (or maybe just a different tradename).
