WTB/Wanted in NY/USA: “Cheap” CRT 2ch 10-50MHz Oscilloscope

Hey All, new to the electronics side of um, electronics? I read in the rules for this thread that PC gear isn’t considered “electronics” lol 😅  but ya I’ve been into anything electronics for awhile, few small degrees in PC related, electrical apprentice, etc. I’ve recently gotten into Amplifier repair and finding I need a 2channel Oscilloscope so I can run a combined/differential reading? I’m still learning so I apologize for my newbness, self teaching everything, and really digging it.

WTB: But ya I need a “cheap” CRT based oscilloscope with onscreen text (frequency, etc so I ain’t gota calculate it myself lol 😅) 2 channels that I can combine (do they all do that if 2+ channels?) prefer a CRT based scope to see the wave really well. Can be anything 10MHZ-50MHz or above or course but I’ll be dealing with mostly square waves on lower spectrum I think (audio amplifier repair)

I don’t have the money for something expensive (anything over $200 is considered “expensive” atm) and anything in that range and I might as well just get an eBay digital 100MHz which is rather not, really hoping I can score something for like $50, doesn’t need to be high MHz or even high quality, or new, just works with on screen text/measurements readout with 2 channels that can probe like a differential. I have PayPal G&S, live near Syracuse NY, and can meet in person or pay for shipping. I have multiple online accts that all have 100% positive reviews, etc. I pride myself on my online rep. But ya this is getting way to long, my bad. thx!

Bonjour: WE got a Hameg 10 MHz 1 ch HM103 at a street sale in Paris paid EU5!

Then bought another Hameg 2 ch 20 MHz HM206 at a flea market EU25.

Made in Germany circa 1980s and both worked.

Suggest to go check Craig's List under electronics, attend  Ham Radio fleas markets (monthly in most states, check ARRL)

Ty for the suggestions and links, I def want to explore my local area more and see what’s available, I’m finding I’m always needing new & different equipment, I’m sure you fellas know what I mean lol My pops just surprised me with a Hantek DSO2C10 out of the blue tho, I’m 43 but man it made me feel like I’m 13 again, haha. A coupl of years ago I bought a Tek 2211 (Compact, dual trace hybrid analog/digital CRT scope) for $75 in very good condition, its still going strong. It appeared to have not had much use when I got it, very clean. I think its fairly common to find nice analog scopes in fairly decent condition for fairly cheap, if you know what youre looking for.

Those old Tek scopes are very useful, if you find one.

Have you checked out the big surplus store in Brooklyn, forget its name?

They're getting thin on the ground, I've been looking sporadically (CL, Ebay, Offerup) and anything I find is some combination of broken (or "untested as-is"), priced halfway or better to a decent new Rigol or Siglent DSO (especially after the shipping charges for something so heavy and delicate), obviously barn fresh, etc. I've seen none of the alleged <$100 Teks or HPs, maybe if they're dead. Not sure if it's pandemic related or just age (many probably tossed or parted rather than repaired). On screen text really limits your options too.

The ham flea markets are about the only place I haven't looked.

I would stay away from the super cheap new stuff.

Maybe they'd have something for you here? Important!  Dave has a video on buying a used scope. You have to know how to read these ads and weed out the junk intuitively or by asking questions beforehand. That way you can protect yourself somewhat.

Check this place out. Its the last of what used to be an entire neighborhood of electronics surplus stores around Canal St. in Manhattan. Now its the only one left. Most of its stock predates the era of the best used scopes, though. As you can see. I would try to get a WORKING mostly solid state, analog CRT scope, cheap. Get one that you can find the service manual for it.

Dont let yourself pay more than say $125 tops for any of these scopes and that only if its working and even passes the opriginal manufacturers specs. (Mine did and still does, which was great, but appropriate for a scope that had been lightly used (although its at least 40 years old now)

Dont be afraid to make a lowball offer in this economy, that might be a meal for a hoarder's family and pets. You should automatically offer less than half the asking price to start or less. Pro Tip: Make sure you use the word "obsolete" in your discussion.  I would target getting a nice, decent, working analog scope, Tektonics or similar quality workhorse US brand like HP, for $100 or less, preferably $75 or $65 no more.

The bigger it is the more of a PITA it is to store or move. Oftentimes this kind of gear is given away "to a good home" Imagine how much money just keeping it is costing anybody around here, and bring that up, that should lower the price.

Untested/as is should be a red flag unless you both
1.) have a good picture of it sort of working (shows a healthy looking trace) and
 2.) Have found that the service manual is available.

Otherwise you could in your eagerness to get a good deal, could end up with a practically worthless non-working boat anchor you cant return because they warned you of its problems and you still bought it agreeing that it was for parts of not working. Once the CRT dies, an old analog scope is USUALLY not worth fixing. Because the tube even if it is replaceable is likely to be expensive, more so than just buying a newer modern digital scope ($300-400) If you need a working instrument, I would just buy a beginners digital scope, like a Rigol. If youre a nostalgic type who misses the problems of the past and wants to relive its anguished moments, well, Ive already told you how to do that. Save a few pennies today.

I have a Tektronix 2235 I am intending to list on EBAY.  I purchased it new from Tektronix quite a few years ago and used in my business, I'm retiring and no longer need it.  It never left the office and looks like new.  It works fine, no problems.. Included are three Tektronix 100 MHz probes. Includes Tektronix service manual also.  I also have a Tektronix Scope cart that I used with it.

Yes doing electronics as a hobby or electronics engineering is different from just being into electronics stuff. Everyone has used mobiles, gadgets, computer parts to sell, they are consumer electronics though not anything specifically related to doing electronics (test equipment, tools, parts, etc).
