Re:

Dave, I have some questions. First off, after that “repair” of the shielding can, you can no longer ever dare to call out bodge wires on other devices; deal? 😛
.

So here’s my queries:

# With all your contacts, and with test eqt mfrs basically THROWING free equipment at you (fair enough, I don’t begrudge that), why on earth would you not just ask Agilent for a spare can, instead of semi-kinda-maybe-uhhh-okayish fixing it like that?

# Why wouldn’t you have the presence of mind to put the can in a sealed bag, label it and affix it firmly to the scope with gaffer tape of a cable tie?

We’re all human and make mistakes I suppose. Is this the effect whereby the cause of it happening is a possibly perceived lessening of value of the scope, in your mind, as it was a freebie?

This is not an accusation, let me make that clear. It baffles me how such a vital part of a very expensive piece of equipment, could be treated with such gay abandon… or maybe it’s your messy hoarders lab (same here - guilty as charged)

Merely asking - and PLEASE fix it properly with a properly sourced can, or one made from properly rated, measured, cut, polished and de-burred metal - DO NOT MAKE ME GRASS YOU UP TO MR CARLSON! 😂

You may think "It works, no one would know" but that's just it - YOU will know inside, and if it were me I couldn't sleep until I'd done it properly.

I really don't think Agilent will have a spare can.

Only thing that would bother me is that copper groundplane flapping in the breeze. I'd have soldered that bit together.

I really don't think Agilent will have a spare can.

Thinking by assumption, and not bothering to try, is different to actually asking them, and knowing.

I can safely say Agilent won't, Rohde and Schwarz on the other hand...

Dude probably has 5+ oscilloscopes that are better than this one. Part of the unsaid agreement about receiving free stuff, is keeping it and not immediately selling it off. Which I doubt he really wanted to do anyway, as it can be useful for future video comparisons/etc.
You are viewing this from your perspective, and not from the perspective of a youtube creator whose focus was on making the video.

Have you seen Ave/Bigclive/etc? They take stuff apart, damage it, often destroy it, rarely repair it. Its not to encourage others to do the same.

How do you know from which perspective I’m seeing it? An iffy bodge repair is just that, regardless of “perspective”. I am acutely aware of how YouTube sponsorships and marketing budgets work, having done the same myself for years on YouTube and elsewhere, albeit with products of a lesser value.

The perspective of how it’s seen is entirely irrelevant - as I said in the OP, it wasn’t and isn’t an accusation, it’s just somewhat strange that something of such value would be treated as if it’s not worthy of a proper repair. Some soul is going to inherit that later down the line, and one day someone (someone like Dave, and with equally as high standards) will say “Oh my word! Who on earth has been poking around in here? Look at that messed up lifted  track and the bodged together screening can!”

🤣

Also maybe something not considered is that, although we see “like a bought one” and yeah, we know what he means, there’s always a chance that someone @ Rohde and Schwarz may take exception to having their brand name and as-new construction, being compared to the quality of Dave’s repair. Yeah I might be thinking too much on this, but one never knows what corporate types will do next.
