(EEVblog2) “Rohde & Schwarz HMO1202 - Like a Bought One” can repair

Dave, I have some questions. First off, after that “repair” of the shielding can, you can no longer ever dare to call out bodge wires on other devices; deal? 😛
.

So here’s my queries:

# With all your contacts, and with test eqt mfrs basically THROWING free equipment at you (fair enough, I don’t begrudge that), why on earth would you not just ask Agilent for a spare can, instead of semi-kinda-maybe-uhhh-okayish fixing it like that?

# Why wouldn’t you have the presence of mind to put the can in a sealed bag, label it and affix it firmly to the scope with gaffer tape of a cable tie?

We’re all human and make mistakes I suppose. Is this the effect whereby the cause of it happening is a possibly perceived lessening of value of the scope, in your mind, as it was a freebie?

This is not an accusation, let me make that clear. It baffles me how such a vital part of a very expensive piece of equipment, could be treated with such gay abandon… or maybe it’s your messy hoarders lab (same here - guilty as charged)

Merely asking - and PLEASE fix it properly with a properly sourced can, or one made from properly rated, measured, cut, polished and de-burred metal - DO NOT MAKE ME GRASS YOU UP TO MR CARLSON! 😂

You may think "It works, no one would know" but that's just it - YOU will know inside, and if it were me I couldn't sleep until I'd done it properly.

I really don't think Agilent will have a spare can.

Only thing that would bother me is that copper groundplane flapping in the breeze. I'd have soldered that bit together.

Thinking by assumption, and not bothering to try, is different to actually asking them, and knowing.

I can safely say Agilent won't, Rohde and Schwarz on the other hand...
