[rant] The Future of Youtube Tech
« on: March 19, 2020, 08:22:27 pm »
I dunno, it just seems so sad that the vast majority of the universe seems FAR more interested in watching cats playing piano on youtube than watching tech/learning videos.

99.999% of popular youtube content is entertainment. Music videos, watching people play video games, people doing goofy stuff, etc. That's, by far, what sells.

I'm so thankful for folks like Dave and others who have been successful at hanging in there and surviving while producing REAL tech content for those who appreciate it. But I see so many others who either drop out because they get zero revenue after working so hard, or they end up catering to the "OOO, shiny hardware with flashing lights" crowd and other non-tech entertainment just to get views and revenue.

My only suggestion for those who enjoy this free tech content: do yourself and everyone a favor and support these channels, even if it's just hitting "like" and subscribing. We're not entitled to this stuff in any way, and it's pretty much the only segment of the universe where you can get so much for free.

So are things as dreary as they seem in the tech world, or does anyone know of a light at the end of the tunnel? I've been doing this electrical engineering thing for over 45 years, and I hate to be that guy who says "geez, when I was young it was so different", but geez, when I was young....  :D

Yeah it is, but look at most of what cable TV is, watching the Karcrashians do mundane shit or that tripe called "Love Island". Load of balls. Nothing new, not that I like or condone the situation.

Instead I'm glad that there are plenty of channels putting out good content for free and regularly so. I don't subscribe to the shite, I subscribe to the good stuff and learn something every single day thanks to the generosity of these high quality channels.

Good point, Antalife. Of course people have different tastes. But sometimes, in order for ourselves and our society to get better, you have to decide not to always follow the fun easy stuff. Sometimes you need to do the un-fun and difficult stuff if you want yourself and the world to improve.

But I don't think people realize the negative implications of having this free entertainment everywhere, and they get dragged into it. And it's so easy to "unlike" and click off the slightly un-fun stuff, and get handed only the fun stuff that you like, that people go for the fun stuff instinctively.

And when people decide they like things, then those things automatically become "good", and they find reasons to keep doing them. Y'know, like making believe that playing video games will make you incredibly skilled with your hands or some such nonsense.  :palm:

When 99.9999% of most people's internet experience is focused on silly entertainment, I think it's time to take a breath and say, "hmmm...maybe instead of watching cats playing piano and some guy playing Fortnight for 8 hours, maybe throw in a little learning for an hour or two".

Just sayin'...

Yeah we all know that. The majority prefers entertainment to learning. The respective markets also clearly show that, well outside of Youtube. Just the way it is.

Agree that the only thing you can do on an individual basis so that learning content doesn't completely disappear is to support that in any way you can, and if you're so inclined (/skilled), produce some yourself.

Poor boomer, a generation completely radicalized by far-liberal and alt-progressive fundamentalists :scared:

I know the feeling, my boomer parents radicalized me too before they learned better. And frankly, I'm not even sure if they have really learned anything.

I recommend simple therapy: open a private browser window and start watching everything that YouTube recommends you.
Just sit and watch, watch until you can accept that these things exist and this is what the majority cares about :-DD

I do technical videos for those with having a common interest and want to know some in-depth technical details.  Certainly not for everyone, and I do not get my feelings hurt if the masses don’t watch.

I’m also a proud boomer.  Can we at least gang up and trash the GenZ that is partying and going to bars and doing the opposite if social distancing?

They are just doing what they were taught. It wasn't GenZ who pioneered partying in violation of common sense personal hygiene and normalized blatant disregard of their elders :P

 :-DD

Yeah, no kidding...

For those of us who've been around awhile it's kinda amazing how things never change. Every new generation does the same as the previous one. "We know everything, old people are idiots who are destroying the world, and we can do it better cuz we're awesome/cool/groovy, and we also deserve free stuff cuz it's not fair other people have stuff and we don't".

The hippies of my generation said it, millenials are saying it now, and everyone in-between has been saying it.

And then at some point we all grow up and learn the hard lessons, thereby becoming the (hopefully) smarter old folks, who the new generation then feels compelled to trash. Because young people know everything and can do it better.  :D

BTW, has anyone actually seen any of those communes of free love, free sex, and free money that the hippies wanted to believe were real?  :D

I guess they found out that all the magical free stuff was actually coming from one of their members who had really rich parents  :D

Anyway, GET OFF MY LAWN !!!!

Ok guys, I had to browse wikipedia for a while to get more info on "GenX, GenZ, Boomers, Millennials".
Interesting reading. Quite a long wiki page on who used word "Boomer", or "OK Boomer" first time. Pretty educative, indeed.

I've learned today I am GenX.

I've also learned why "the vast majority of the universe seems far more interested in watching cats playing piano on youtube than watching tech/learning videos".

Quote
The [GenX] cohort has been credited with entrepreneurial tendencies, and was the last generation for whom higher education was broadly financially remunerative.

TALK TO THE HAND!!  :)

Hold on, is "OK Boomer" a thing?

"Boomer", yeah, but "OK Boomer??

Hold on I'll check with Mr. Google.......

Oh, okay, it's just a cute "Tik Tok" way of dismissing old people. So the millenials, who think criticizing anyone should be illegal and punished by life in prison, feel comfortable criticizing old people because, well, they're old, and therefore bad. And, BTW, boomers are also fair game for coronavirus apparently. Cuz, like, they're old. DUH !!!

As long as young people aren't affected it's okay.  :D

I don't recall if the hippies had something similar, or just a general implied hatred of old people.

Thanks.

I didn't find it disturbing at all. I didn't understand a word of it  :D

Speaking of young people having a natural instinct to hate and dismiss old people, if you want a laugh I encourage you to look at the Wikipedia (or even see if there's a youtube version you can watch) of a 1968 (yes, that was over 50 years ago...) movie entitled "Wild in the Streets".

It's about young people deciding that they can run government far better than the old establishment folks, so a bunch of 18+ year old hippie teens take over Washington in a coup, and one of the hippies becomes president.

And at the end of the movie, they're surprised that suddenly a group of even younger teens (13 year olds) decide to perform a coup on the hippies because THEY are too old.

Pretty hilarious. And no, I have no idea how I remembered that.

Here it is:

This has to be obvious satire or YT would have banned him on the spot. If you want "disturbing", find those who are serious about the same >:D

Back on topic, cat videos are obviously the new substitute for soap operas and sportsball. Now, somebody tell me, how could anyone possibly watch that? :scared:

Back in the day, the  elders would stroke their beards & bewail the fact that:-
"A potentially great medium for education, in the form of Television, had been wasted on entertainment!"

My rejoinder to that was:-
"If I want to be educated, I'll go to Night School!"

Of course, that was when Night School was worth attending, instead of the "Monkey see, monkey do" crud we have now!

Back, more on topic---------my pet hate is the Youtube clips showing somebody unpacking a DSO or whatever, turning it on, & displaying some random signal.
No voice over, no captions, just annoying theme music, reminiscent of that in the background of 1980s pornos.
