1976/8 modem
« on: April 18, 2019, 09:05:54 am »
Hi I would like your ideas on this issue I have.

I bought an old house and while cleaning it out I found what I thought was a strange amplifier/equalizer and at the time I thought it would be interesting to look inside at some point in the future so I kept it.

I just got round to take a look at it. It has seven, 3 way switches, 12 leds and what looks like a 4 pin big round mic jacks. The labels on the leds are Rx, Tx, CD, BCD, DSR, OH, RI, AA, Eq, Fault, Test and power. I thought modems of the day had acoustic couplers but this was wired via the mic jack and that is why I probably made the mistake.

I searched the internet and found only 1 picture in a university museum and the caption it says … this can be considered the first networked computer (in this country). It then goes onto give details of the modem and says it was connected to an identical modem at a different Uni. The date code on the chips inside confirm the dates given by the Uni.

My basic question is what does everyone think I should I do..
The considerations are,
A country in the EUs first networked computer (internet only arrived in the early 90s)
Do I contact the museum.
Any suggestion welcome.

Sorry to be a bit vague, but don't worry I will post pictures of it once I decide what I should do.

Thanks
s :-\

Absent any provenance it's only curiosity value.  See if the centre for computing history wants it.
