1Ghz Keysight Pro-Gaming Oscilloscope with Liquid Cooling
« on: February 28, 2021, 09:22:21 pm »
He starts out with a Keysight MSO-X 3104T and 'enhances' the cosmetics and cooling quite a bit.
After watching this my scope is starting to look pretty bland. ;D

Summary:

Meet the world's first liquid-cooled dual-screen RGB pro-gaming oscilloscope, the MLG-Z 42069.™ It's got TWO windows.

Keysight Technologies sent me an $18,000 oscilloscope, and I used my gaming PC case-modding skills to hack in a Raspberry Pi Pico, carve out a window, add a water-cooled Raspberry Pi touchscreen, and taste the rainbow with over six feet of RGB DotStar and NeoPixel LED's. It's our last week before moving to Colorado, and we're going out with a crassly ostentatious bang.

Like... why?  I don't even get why Keysight would sponsor this video with a free scope.  Who are they attracting here?  Your average 'RGB Gamer Arduino Engineer' isn't going to have the cash for a $2,000 Keysight scope, let alone the $18k top-end 3000 series.  And a engineering manager responsible for buying T&M is not going to spec out  scopes on the basis of this video here... If anything, it just makes me go, "what a waste of time, money, and RGB LEDs."

The only logic I can see is Keysight know each scope really costs very little to make compared to the NREs behind the scope,  you're essentially paying for R&D when buying something like this,  so even one sale will easily make up for the cost of the scope.  But, yeah... it's odd.

It's almost as though an oscilloscope is an instrument intended for displaying useful information rather than inducing office wide epileptic seizures.

That is pure vandalism, and horrible waste..
Is that how Keysight values their own instrument?
It shows lack of respect towards something valuable and good.
Why they didn't give it to a school in some country that cannot afford it?
Instead give it to an idiot to vandalize it ??

Keysight, there is such a thing as bad marketing...Fail.

The whole concept is ridiculous, in (my opinion) a VERY bad way, technically speaking.

Test equipment (in some environments), is used to carefully take accurate readings, which can be used to make very important manufacturing/design decisions. Incorrect results can (in some cases), lead to production failures (mistakes), which can cost businesses fortunes, or even badly damage the companies image.
It might even affect the safety of devices, that are put into production.

So, opening up a (presumably/generally) calibrated test instrument, and making internal modifications. Which could affect the reliability/accuracy/warranty and even safety of any measurements made with the equipment. Is a real big NO NO.

Their marketing department, may think it is an obvious 'joke', but (at least to me), it looks ridiculous.

I can't see how Keysight, expect to be taken seriously as a decent/quality maker of quality/reliable/accurate test equipment, if they make stunts like this.

tl;dr
I'm now seriously worried that the senior technical people at Keysight, don't have the necessary management influence, to produce reliable instruments, if things like that video, get past marketing.   :palm:

I.e. If someone gave me hundreds of millions of dollars, to buy an aircraft, would I choose Boeing, as the suppler of the aircraft ?

A brand can be damaged, by poor management.

That's, ermm, yeah, I'll just be over in that corner weeping gently.

I'm trying to save up the cash for a reasonable Siglent and he gets to wreck $18K of Keysight, heartbreaking.

The guitar thing, from some passing involvement with a few bands and a rather well connected drummer who was married to a colleague*, it's extremely rare that a guitarist will smash up something of value (they do generally actually care about the instruments), they usually smash up the Owon of guitars rather than the Keysight and there's often some poor put upon guitar tech who's tasked with gluing even the cheap ones back together so they can be 'played' and then smashed up again at the next gig.

*It's quite something to pop into a tiny, local drum shop to drop off repaired PA gear to find yourself drinking tea and chatting with people you've seen on the front cover of Kerrang or similar publications.

Oookay.  :palm:

Because of this, I shall not be participating in Keysight University Live this year.  I have a strict bullshit filter, and this thing just clogged it.
(Not that I would ever win anything, nor is me not participating a negative for Keysight, because I have zero effect on anyone acquiring Keysight products.)

This is a hit piece like any other over-exaggerated news article out there.

Although I think that committing a 1GHz oscilloscope is extremely wasteful and a slap in the face over many folks that would like to have a simple Owon, it is cheap change for Keysight to throw this out there and try to cater to a broader (younger?) audience that is fully on board with computer mods, LEDs, liquid cooling and 3D Printers. Just check the likes/dislikes ratio on the video and several praising comments - the horrified souls are the absolute minority.

The caveat: whoever is making the decisions today and will bring the $$$ most probably don't care/didn't watch/is not swayed by this stunt.

I have just PMed Daniel Bogdanoff, pointing at this thread and asking for his PoV.
Did you watch the video? Keysight is fully onboard with that. For them it is cheap change to try something new.

(edit) And no, before you start throwing tomatoes, I did not appreciate the stunt but maybe I am very jaded with similar things done in the past to completely unrelated/disconnected initiatives.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...

Oh wow this is so bad on many levels.

First of all why modding like that in the first place, it actually decreases the value of the scope (and I bet the specs). I bet here on the forum there are many much more interesting mods, frontend tweaks, mods for older probes to work with AutoProbe etc.

Second, even if we assume there is some value in this gamer-RGB-eye-candy modding well this one isn't very aesthetic at all, more like a crude hacksaw + hot glue gun type of job.

Seems like Keysight doesn't take pride in their designs much nowadays to allow such "publicity".

If this is the case, it is a serious damage to their reputation. They did not learn from awarding a top level scope to a teen's water heater project a few years back, did they.

Quit whining ya'll. You are just jealous you didn't come up with it.  >:D There are lots of equipment uphacking threads on this forum.

The watercooling system is an interesting idea. There is quite a bit of equipment out there with heatsinks and screeming fans just to cool a few devices. I can do without the LEDs for sure but it could be an interesting idea to get cooling directed at devices which need it the most.

I'd say A for effort. Pity that the RGB lit encoder knobs didn't work out. But the guy needs a financial donation to get his glasses fixed.

Some people just like to mod stuff. This car probably cost more than $20k and look what someone with a sick mind did to it:

There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
