1RU Rack mount PC - Recommendations?
« on: March 21, 2018, 09:04:08 am »
Evening all. I'm after some recommendations by those who might have put together something similar before. I'm retiring some old Dell server gear along with a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Pro box and replacing it with some more powerful and less power-hungry machines.

While the UBNT EdgeRouter Pro has been a decent device for the price I paid, it lacks some features which I need (but exist in the Security Gateway and vice versa). There doesn't appear to be one UBNT device which does the job of the EdgeRouter and USG and I'm not about to start fiddling with third party packages etc...

I'm essentially looking for a 1RU rack mount PC which will handle a minimum of 100 Mbps traffic routing and some security stuff, so it doesn't need to be super powerful, however it does need to support the AES-NI instruction set. Dual redundant power supply would be nice, but not necessary, as long as spares are cheap and easy to obtain. Must have at least 3 on-board NICs or the capacity to add a PCI Express or PCI-X adapter. Graphics adapter is optional as it will be run as a headless unit.

I am aware that Aliexpress sometimes has some units running Celeron processors, but I'd like to avoid these. I don't want to spend big money, but I don't mind paying a bit extra for something decent. I've been looking at something like the Supermicro SuperServer 5019A-FTN4

Suggestions?

been using SuperMicro SuperServer 5018A-MLTN4 for a couple of years now (have maybe 5 of those..)
may not float your boat as nothing is easily replaceable (integrated single PSU, mobo comes with CPU+heatsink (removable??), 4 integrated NICs on mobo, etc.).
not sure about the Atom-bug if it's a still a concern or not.
in any case they are low power consumption and TDP and so far so good...

There should be a lot of used X9 Supermicro 1Us floating around. If you were american, you'd be able to put together a full system for <200$ USD shipped with a cheap xeon and 8GB of memory and a cheap SSD, the CSE512 chassis is probably the most common here. I'm Canadian and I get screwed by shipping but buying from the states is still the cheapest for me for those chassis since they seem to have a ridiculous surplus of them. The chassis sells for ~30$ USD, an X9SCL or comparable board for ~40$

A quick ebay shows https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Supermicro-1U-CSE-815-X9SCI-LN4F-E3-1270-3-4GHz-8Gb-Quad-Gigabit-1U-Server/362248729614?hash=item5457b4f40e:g:aFQAAOSwgYVZ2jea as a possible choice at    £360+shipping. That should be a price similar to the base C3xxx bundle. You'll probably pay like 10-15W of extra idle power I think in comparison to a C3xxx atom.

I have 4 supermicro x9 boxes. they're kind of old but have more than enough performance for what I want out of them. Sadly, if you go X9, you're going to need a xeon to get AES instructions. I paid 30$ CAD for an i3 3220 but 85$ USD for an e3-1220v2, so it isn't a huge difference in price if you search ebay often.

Even if you were to buy an atom chassis, I'd probably try to find one used, and/or look to see if there's a cheap xeon-d system. Obviously, I would go Supermicro for them as well.
