I think we need to colonize Saturn's rings
« on: July 24, 2018, 04:03:08 pm »
In order to protect the species from Comet Doom, and put our eggs in different baskets, I propose we detonate a few nuclear bombs in Saturn's rings so we can mine the ice there.
Once we have set up a robust Saturn cloud colony, I have a theory based on fecal cerebral incontinence that by simply wishing hard enough it will become true.
I'll add some artist's impressions, some vaguely scientific terms, maybe some dog whistles and get all the nerds whipped up into a frenzy.

Who's with me?

Star Trek is REAL TO ME!!!

I actually like Pluto better, to enjoy some quiet and solitude.

And as the Solar-system's highest elevation point (well, at least for some of the time) you have a vantage point of the Solar system.

Pluto is not even a planet. Try to pay attention, I am charting the future of the human species here, this isn't something to be taken lightly or trivial. It makes me feel important to discuss such pressing matters.

I truly apologize for my deep ignorance. Indeed, Pluto has been demoted to a Proto planet!

However, the view of Charon and the other moonlets would prove to be irresistible!
I still vote Pluto.

In order to protect the species from Comet Doom,.....

..... I propose we detonate a few nuclear bombs in Saturn's rings

Few moments after the major detonations at the rings ... "Houston, expecting major storm of debris & splinters with sized of an island each are heading toward you ... over & out "

Good, I'll set up the GoFundMe.

I'll save the human race even if I have to write a sci-fi novel to do it!

Fine, stay on Earth with your silly 101 KPa pressure, your 20C temperature, your 1G gravity field, your silly liquid water and food and trees.

Some of us are above that silly materialism and are plotting the Holy Space Destiny of Humanity in the Galaxy, if not the entire universe. Computers got better, so anything is possible.

Please go quietly and take as many religious leaders, politicians, lawyers, marketing wankers and other career criminals with you.
They’ll none of them be missed.  :-+  :horse:

so long as some idiot does not nuke our planet, it will happen.

Today (er,yesterday) BBC and others announced water below the surface of Mars. several kilometers big.

How long I do not know, but one thing needs to happen on earth and that is longer average lifespan. perhaps even push it with us having cyborg-like features. say 150 yrs ave, and 200 with stem cell regeneration and a collection a 3D printer part replacements for our bodies?

We need longer just for the education required today. Not just science and tech, we also need to become expert at social and psychological concerns, advanced training in creating harmonious societies and assorted community structures, etc.

I know a University professor that has noticed that her students take serious interest of what will be happening 100 years from now. They all expect to be alive then...so,

it will happen

I vote for IVV to be sent to the gulag. Clearly they will find life more enjoyable there, as everything is well-defined and nothing interesting is possible.

Oh, wait - In Vacuo Veritas is (or claims to be) Canadian. Problem solved.

@In Vacuo Veritas, just join Isaac Arthur's web channel.  Though he has a few videos dealing with FTL technology, everything else he deals with in space and our future deals with what we can truly accomplish and in what amount of time and where in space we can get with current knowledge today, using real numbers and physical facts.

You will see how small and puny Star Trek is compared to the kind of civilizations we can create and where we can actually travel and how commerce and interaction would operate over such large distances and times.  I expect a thanks after the first 50 episodes or so...  It's gonna take a month solid straight of watching to get through them.  Hint, stick with episodes with at least 100k views...

Isaac Arthur's Channel : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZFipeZtQM5CKUjx6grh54g/videos?view=0&flow=grid&sort=da

Start from the beginning, or around year 2 as his quality, subscribers and supporters begin to increase radically...

Take it easy on the dreamers, IVV. They can’t drink reality from a fire hose.

Let them dream..

There are mountains in the rings of Saturn. Probably make a great tourist destination.

Unless they are very large condo apartments. In which case it already is a tourist destination.

TH:
What an extraordinary photo! Thanks for sharing.

Speaking now in jest:
I have changed my mind. I don't want to retire to Pluto anymore. Saturn looks to be far more interesting!
