I am in the process of restoring an old 550W American beauty soldering iron.
After taking it apart i noticed something i do not understand... What appears to be a 2nd winding made of copper wire. Low resistance, 0.1ohm as measured on fluke 87, so basically a straight shot.
looks like this:

One end of it broke off, so i am not sure if it was electrically tied to the chassis or what. Appears to be not connected to the heating element winding.
Anyone know what its for and where the end that broke off was tied to? My only guess is that it is meant to be chassis ground for the tip, but if so, seems way longer and way thinner gauge wire than would make sense for a ground connection.

Thanks.

EDIT: Found some other pictures of the element and that winding is connected to the two collars on the ends of the heating element. The hot end is held in by screws in the front collar, so by all practical purposes that means the winding is electrically connected to the hot end. Still looks strange to be that long for just a ground wire...
