32-level grayscale on an e-ink display

That came out of a Kindle which drives it with a controller that can only do 16 levels. I'm not aware of any existing products that do more, but you can make your own controller and it isn't all that different from PWM'ing LEDs, except the timescale is many orders of magnitude longer.

Dithering the image is much easier than this.
And, as the author said, it is not really a stable solution since he ignores temperature.
