That blury vendor's ad at the bottom of this page turned out to be an actual red/blue 3D picture. I was looking through my junk the other day and found a pair of red/blue 3D glasses, tried them on the ad and the center of the ad popped right out. ;D
Why would anyone want to make such ads in 2022 is one's guess. :-//

No different to having a QR code or some cryptic address. It's designed to reach and engage a specific audience. As you said, it worked!

Well I think it's really cool NOW. It shows a capability to think of something different, that doesn't involve the usual. Props to them for sending something out that the 2% of intelligent people (like the OP) will pick up on, and appreciate.
