504 Gateway Time-out
« on: May 03, 2013, 12:49:36 pm »
I have been getting the "504 Gateway Time-out" error quite a bit during the past week or so. A couple of days ago, the site was inaccessible for a couple of hours in the morning.

Any one else have this issue?

Yes, same here.
Last one was just 15 minutes ago.
Took a couple of minutes until it worked again.

Geoff (head penguin) is aware of the issue.
The last major error was due to a "stuck backup process" apparently.
I didn't know it has happened multiple times.
So only in the last week or so?

It certainly seems that way. This error usually means a back-end setting issue though.

Hi guys,

Sorry for this, I have applied a few changes that should help with this, but only time will tell if it actually resolves it. There is also a backup process that runs that could be causing it, but I am yet to perform further testing to see if it is occurring during the time that the backup runs.

I thought these days backup process is seamless ?  ???

I mean no matter what happened at that backup process even its failed or stuck-ed, it will not affect the main active operating apps right ?

Remembered had to shutdown the active running program when backup process was initiated, but that was in DOS era.  :-//

It never used to.
I've been running the same cpanel backup process for maybe 9 months now.
I can disable this backup for a while and see if goes away, or initiate one on demand and see it shuts the sever down again.

I just got the problem again now.
I have now disabled siteautobackup.com for the next few days to see if this is the culprit.
Please report any future errors here.

Ok, it happened again tonight. At almost the exact same time as last night.
external backups were disabled.
HostGator could not access my server and rebooted it.
Still no idea what the problem is.

I am seeing a stack of PHP processes running trying to serve requests, server out of RAM and very hard to get to respond. Restarting Apache fixes it, but I am still to identify the cause. I apologise for the issue but this one is a little hard to track down due to the symptoms when it occurs.

The 540, was due the reset of the server? Was the server alive for anyone?

Well, php is likely either the forum, or Wordpress, right?
I wonder if I installed a rouge plugin in the last week or so, can't recall...

Response from HostGator:
Quote
The server experienced extremely high load and became unresponsive. The load spike appears to be occurring at around 10:30pm server-time (EST) on most days. Unfortunately, the logs were inconclusive in determine what was going on at the time. I am unable to determine specifically what the issue was. I've installed our system-snapshot tool on your server which creates detailed logs of the processes running on the server, as well as MySQL and network activity. If this happens again, the logs produced by this will make it much easier to see exactly what the server was doing at the time.

I see you have WP Super Cache installed on the site, however caching is not enabled on it. I would recommend enabling it and configuring it as outlined in this article. This can help allow the site to serve more traffic while using less resources as it would dynamically generate pages less frequently.
http://support.hostgator.com/articles/specialized-help/technical/wordpress/wp-super-cache-plugin

I've also optimized some fragmented database tables and increased the MySQL query cache from 8M to 64M. These should help increase database performance, allowing queries to complete more quickly and hopefully have them stack up less and impact server load less:

eevblog_smp01.smf_log_search_results
eevblog_smp01.smf_log_search_topics
eevblog_smp01.smf_sessions
