75th Anniversary of the Transistor
(1/1)
Sal Ammoniac:
On December 16th, 1947 John Bardeen and Walter Brattain first achieved the transistor effect in a point-contact germanium device at Bell Labs, starting a revolution in semiconductors that continues to this day.

Or was it Julius Edgar Lilienfeld, who patented the FET on October 22, 1925?
jpanhalt:
I wasn't quite in on the inception, but as a 9 year old, I got into RC model airplanes.  I used  a kit for the transmitter and was clueless.  A lot later (1957), I was playing with electronics per se.  This is one of my first booklets on that subject (1957):

I built a PCB with a flip-flop.  My  mom wasn't impressed.  ;)
Tomorokoshi:
And here I am only getting up to speed on diodes.

Well, Julius' work helped pave the way to the first practical transistor but he did not really build one. That said, IMO he should have been acknowledged by the Nobel prize organization, but their decisions can be a mystery sometimes... :-\
