A Cool Bit of History
« on: September 18, 2014, 01:34:22 pm »
After going through a box of surplus from an estate sale I recently acquired, I found these little nuggets. I can't be sure what processor this is but these look like manufacturers demo pieces. There are two 40 pin IC's with the no caps and a single unused, un-soldered cap. No markings except for what looks like pencil indicating 1/0. Nevertheless, a very cool bit of history that I am guessing (Could be wrong), late 70's to early 80's. I will put these under the high power microscope a little later and get some close-up imagery.

Interesting holes also, I wonder if you are supposed to screw the chip down on the board...

The X-Banded 40 pin chip is a Mostek MK6010. This was launched in 1971 and was sold to Busicom as a one-chip solution for their new line of LE-120A calculators. The chip was powered by  -12V and -25V to ground. Attached are some microscopy images down to the die level. I have yet to identify the other, will do so later today if I have time. I have the high resolution images I can post to a download service if anyone is interested.
