Electronics things to see in London
« on: June 29, 2014, 11:36:50 am »
Hi all,

About to board a flight to London. Any interesting things I should check out while I'm there? Surplus stores, interesting museums (electrical related), etc

Thanks!

Science museum definitely ( allow a whole day)

A day trip to Amberley Museum is worth considering, in particular the energy electricity hall. Plenty of other stuff for less-interested family  to see.

Nothing in the way of surplus etc. to speak of.

Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.

Plus One for The Science Museum (Exhibition Road South Ken) this has everything from Victorian stuff and earlier through to early computers which are not very old at all. It is a big place though so allow plenty of time. If you have other family members to keep happy there is the Natural History museum next door and the V&A across the way.

Tottenham Court Road used to be the place for electronics shops but this is just computers and hi-fi stuff and is rather boring now-a-days, there is nothing like the electronics markets in Tokyo sadly.

If you book in advance you can (apparently - I've not done it myself) view the IEE (now IET) archives :

http://www.theiet.org/resources/library/archives/index.cfm

This probably contains things like Faraday's notebooks.

All the museums on Exhibition Road, South Ken. are worth visiting, The Natural History, Victoria & Albert, and Science Museum.

I've not been since the 1980's, but I went to a seriously shit secondary school and ended up bunking off every day and spending all my time at the museums instead. I learn't far more back then than being in a shit school. The Science Museum was my favourite. After a few months of this I eventually switched to a proper school that I actually enjoyed going to each day and my inner 11 year old museum curator decided to retire, and give comprehensive school education another stab.

Mike, are there any of your projects currently on display / in use in the London area that he might want to check out?

Nothing worth a detour, but if you're going back via Heathrow on Quantas, BA or Virgin you'll see the new thing at Terminal 2.

Something that I just remembered. Not electronics, but definitely science and engineering: The royal Observatory and Royal Museums at Greenwich
