Also, the attiny2313/4313 is pin-compatible with the 2051, so you could replace it with an AVR-based mcu.

Hi Edy. I've found posts stating that the shipped chip was not programmed at all. Unfortunatly the chip is usually the "parallel" and not the "serial" version so the programmer is a little bit costly. i'm checking the ledtester link. it could be a nice pasttime. what a pity that this clock are not sold at 1$ anymore.
