Am I correct in understanding that the tricoder uses the change of angle of incidence from the directional laser's output, subtracting out the before waveform where the laser was in direct focus of the surface of the container with the afterm a general illumination of the container, to see through the plastic/glass container to analyze the contents inside, correct? |

A collimated laser isn't really in "focus" anywhere. What they use is a shift in the spacing between the laser and detector. Knowing the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection, the distance to the target is a function of that spacing. If the target distance is inside the object, then the detected light must be reflected from inside the object. That is why there are crossing aiming markers that allow for consistent placement of the OUT at the correct distance from the sensor head. |
