For the oscilloscope probes and other long cables I use a round plastic container (from ice cream) anchored vertically on the wall, similar with this:

Longer cables and oscilloscope probes are left to hang left and right above the round box.  The diameter of the container is big enough, about 22cm (9inch), so to not bend-stress the hanging probes.

The cables are left to hang half cable on the left side, and the other half of the cable on the right, such that the cable rest in the shape of a "U-turn".   That way a probe has to support only half of its own weight, as opposed to the typical straight-hanging, where all the weight of the cable+connector stretches the cable.

Your idea is better than mine if for no other reason that you must eat the ice cream in order to store your probes.
