A Valentine's Day activity for your scope and function generator
« on: February 14, 2017, 09:15:02 pm »
You need a scope with X-Y mode and a two channel function gen that will give you a basic sign wave and 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th harmonics, so a lot of people should be equipped well enough for a little Valentine's Day themed graphing (though this post is late for a bunch of the world...)

X channel:
1MHz, 4Vpp, 180 degree phase
2nd harmonic: 3Vpp
4th harmonic: 0.8Vpp, 180 degree phase
6th harmonic: 0.2Vpp
8th harmonic: 0.1Vpp, 180 degree phase

Y channel:
1MHz, 4.5Vpp, 1V DC offset, 90 degree phase
2nd harmonic: 3.6Vpp, 90 degree phase
4th harmonic: 0.2Vpp, 90 degree phase
6th harmonic: 0.6Vpp, 90 degree phase
8th harmonic: 0.1Vpp, 90 degree phase

The frequency doesn't really matter, as long as your display settings and bandwidth are right on the scope end, 1MHz was just easy and was easy to visualize with pretty default settings on my scope.

I've also got a rambling description and the result in a 1 minute video, here:  http://youtu.be/eTlpzvmM0tU

Well, I think Siglent should send you a commission check.  I have been thinking about an AWG for quite a while and one of the things I hadn't been thinking about is the ability to add harmonics.  I have no idea whether any/all other AWGs can do this but I do know the SDG2082X can do it.

Thanks for the tip!

I would have thought that National Hallmark Day #1... sorry, "Valentine's Day" would be a day when you would want to show your loved one you are capable of coming OFF the 'scope and test equipment and paying HER all the attention, not finding a reason to get ON it.

LOL.

Thanks very much for this, it's doing the rounds.  ;)

SDG1062X and no doubt the SDG1032X can do it too.
SDS2304X in XY mode.

For convenience a small doc with settings (From OP)

The SDG2082X is what I bought for this project.  I was considering a signal generator but I hadn't gotten around to it.  It came in last night (yes, I know, I'm a week late) and I configured the project this morning.  What a great AWG!  Good thing I waited, there are plenty of signal generators that don't allow for harmonics.

Being able to save the setup to the internal 'disk drive' is a blessing.  There's a lot of button pushing involved in getting the channels set up.

Nice, enjoy your new AWG, congrats.

Yep, well I thought I was somewhat familiar with the UI's on Siglent AWG's, well how wrong was I.  ::)
Harmonics.  :scared:

Simple enough to input all the settings, sure and the UI's intuitive enough for it to be pretty straight forward but remember if you're to use the same settings again immediately and if you've set the AWG to power up using last settings there's no need to save the settings.

True, I don't absolutely have to save the settings - for this year.  But I'm almost certain to want to use them again next year.  I also saved them to an external USB drive and my NAS box - I really don't want to enter them again!

What a great tool!

The OP date might've have been right for DaJMasta but V day was already gone here.
I was only a day late, not a week and yes you'll need to use it again next year to make up for it.  :-DD
