AD9102 and AD9106: Not recommended for new designs?
« on: April 23, 2019, 10:38:55 pm »
Hi,

Today I was caught by surprise when I realized that the AD9102 and AD9106 were no longer recommended for new designs. As the poor documentation around these parts was not bad enough, I may add. However, Analogy Devices doesn't offer similar parts.

It doesn't make sense to me that they are declaring these parts to be obsolete soon without providing alternatives. They don't have any chip suitable for arbitrary waveform generation besides the ones mentioned. I could get away by using a DAC and some discrete logic, but dual port RAMs are expensive and hard to find.

What are your thoughts? Can you think of any alternatives?

Kind regards, Samuel Lourenço

Hmm, that's odd.  Those parts aren't even that old (2012).  One of those Hittite execs must have worked his way up to the C-suite.

Yup! It looks like that's it. I don't know if Analog is having trouble selling these chips or what, but they are shooting their own foot if they plan to discontinue those. Instead, they should focus on improving the datasheets. My two cents.

Anyway, I was planning to build a projecto around the AD9102, and I still am. Most of my projects end up being one-offs irregardless, só I'm not too worried.

Kind regards, Samuel Lourenço

I've found this AD9102 arbitrary function generator: complete project in Github

https://github.com/Frauschi/Funktionsgenerator

p.s.: the 9102 is recommended for new designs

The official AD page shows them as in production:
https://www.analog.com/en/products/ad9102.html#product-overview
https://www.analog.com/en/products/ad9106.html

Where did you find the information that they are being phased out?

For some time, they were marked NRND on the product page, in the same area of the page that currently says, "This product is appropriate for new designs but newer alternatives may exist."

I guess an important customer recalibrated their attitudes.

Possibly someone pressed the wrong thing on the website manager.
