Agilent U1253 firmware update/glitch in charging time
« on: February 09, 2012, 01:26:15 am »
Agilent just emailed me about a possible glitch in the U1253 firmware causing the charging to finish before the battery actually is full, causing a shorter battery life etc..

Here is the link to the Agilent service note:

I don't have a infrared usb cable so if anyone can suggest a cheaper alternative then the Agilent U1173A  cable for $ 31 that would be great.

The cable is fairly cheap looking, but its very hard to find.  You can make your own but I looked into that before and the cost of parts alone to make a serial-USB converter is 1/3 the price of the cable.

The cable is rarely sold separately by even cheapo DMM makers, so if you lose it, it can be a pain to replace.   I looked into modding a Uni-T cable, but alas the cost of the cable is already $20 and no guarantee my mod will work.  Then even if it did, it will look and fit ugly!  :-[

So in the end, the $31 for the real deal is worth it, as one of the benefits of this DMM is its serial connection which the Fluke 87V does not have.
Best Wishes,

for Agilent, this cable is an option. Any agilent retailer should have this cable, I bought it in local electronic store while I bought the meter. As I remember, active123.com, newark.com, digikey.com all have it. pretty cheap compare to Fluck's cable.

Hey all, first of all, for search engine friendliness, this is officially referred to as the U1253A or U1253B EEPROM Update or "Battery Charging Time Update V1.0.exe"

I noticed that the update didn't work for my meter, the updater program couldn't connect. Turns out your meter MUST be set to 9600 baud as the updater assumes that and offers no setting. I had mine set at 19200 from a previous experiment.
