any idea what kind of tube this is?
« on: September 30, 2010, 03:07:13 pm »
A weird tube a colleague showed me at work.  It has two electrodes
sticking out of the top.  Any idea what this is?  This is from his
father's junk collection that he's going through.

Looks like some kind of thyratron variation or trigatron.  Are there markings?

No markings at all.  It was found in a box with some ancient lightning arrestors,
but there's no other information.

I've been scrolling through pictures of vacuum tubes on Google hoping to see something
which looks similar, but no luck.

You could e-mail someone over at www.tubecollector.org and ask.  They might actually want to purchase the device if its something thats rare or they don't have.  I will be interested to know once you find out.

Nothin' like a good internet scavenger hunt. :)

And collector value wise, it doesn't look like you hit the lottery.
I'm either at my bench, here, or on PokerStars.

Other than the 2 electrodes sticking out the top, nothing leads me to believe this is an 829.

Still a double beam tetrode though.

Its the superior european replacement of the 829.

On ebay, the QQV06-40A is going for more than I would ever pay for something so archaicly useless.

No shit ...  ;D   ;D   ;D

On my builds I had use 6C4  5763 & 6146 ,  the 829 had an complex output like coils and capacitors ,
so I never got to it .

Soon enough I started working with PLL and MRF transistors ..  and so no more tubes ..  other than the ones as final stage  800W to 3KW output or more.

Yes, this looks like the item.  Fascinating, I'll pass the info on to my friend!

I've seen them before.  Either a dual triode or tetrode for push-pull RF power amplifier.  Was a big item in WW2 for small portable radios.

The 829 needs about 600V DC on the anode, so it does not work out for portable use.
