Analog vs Digital Cable Quality Issues

(1/2) > >>

jonovid:
about the cables used in home theatre systems /home gaming setups.
should we forget about analog speaker cable myths and concentrate more so on digital cables,
as related to the frequency response range of USB cables.
I have discovered that digital cable quality does affect performance in a dramatic way.

voltage drops and maximum data rates.

be interested to know if this is an issue.

Prepare yourself... onslaught incoming...  ;D

Just use decent quality cables that feel well made. Avoid anything that is ridiculously cheap or ridiculously expensive, or that has lofty claims and testimonials. I've never had any trouble with ordinary middle of the road cables, the only time I have had issues was with extremely cheap flimsy ones.

The so-called digital cables are just as analogue as the cables used to transmit digital signals round the world in the 19th century. Unless you are involved in femto-amp electronics or photon-counting electronics, the electronics are analogue. Other so-called digital electronics are merely analogue electronics which interpret the analogue waveforms as digital signals.

Once that is understood the strategy is obvious: ensure that there is good signal integrity in the waveforms received at the destination. You won't have to be concerned about processing the digital signals, since that is out of your control.

Thus ignore any marketing label on the cables, and select high quality cables with the right impedance (to avoid reflections and pattern sensitive distortions) and a low loss (to ensure the best received signal-to-noise ratio) and decent screening (to avoid introducing noise/ interference)
