Animals using electronics? (a good topic for an open thread)

(1/5) > >>

cdev:
I just stumbled across a bunch of stories on pets, and especially companion dogs being easily trained to use touch screen electronics and thought that might make a good open thread.

Something that's fun and possible to implement if we have some idea perhaps. It would be neat to somehow do something interactive with a touch screen and wild animals.

(but what?)

Edit: It appears that there is a whole discipline called Animal Centered Interface Design.

In other news, people have built vending machines that can be used by crows to buy peanuts.

Mount the screen on a robot so that pets can see their owners from far away.

This is an interesting video, and Momo looks like a great dog.

Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds, etc. are (IMHO, a little biased here, because I've owned 3 of them) far more fun than most dogs, because they are very independently minded, very smart, so much so that they are almost human.

The robot she has has a non-functional front left wheel. Its preventing the robot from moving around properly.

But I do think the concept is a great one. Assuming its not too expensive, sure, I'd get one for when I was away, so I could see what my dog was up to while I was gone, why not?

This 'may' be 'partially' off topic...  but years back when I moved from Adelaide to Perth, (Australia), I brought my CAT!
We keep our cats inside at night, for all the obvious reasons, but give them freedom during the day time. THIS cat was
ok for a while, as it knew where it was fed/loved, but slowly started to roam more & more, and for longer periods...  :P

So I had a 'bright' idea, and attached an old junk iPhone-3 to it, and some tracking software at home, to try and see
where it went!!  (Ha ha..). The cat ended up disappearing down some distant storm water drains, and never came back.
So much for electronics!  I know you can rent stuff from the Council, but it's quite expensive!    ;D

Ranayna:
Ooof, not to sound like a downer, but strapping stuff to free roaming cats is not a good idea. Even collars can be trouble and may cause the cat to get stuck somewhere.
I shudder thinking about the cat with the phone stapped to it's back getting stuck in a storm drain somewhere :(
