What about Form 1?

That looks pretty sweet if that becomes a reality soon.

I liked the Ord Bot Hadron so much that I bought one! ($899)

The mechanics are assembled and the electronics arrived on Friday. I've had a busy weekend with a birthday party and wedding (neither mine) so only had chance to open the package today. It's missing the end stop switches so that will be another weeks delay for the seller to send me some.

Mine looks slightly different than the attached photo in that the extruder mount is now blue anodised aluminium.

i wonder how the extruder works? using heat or something? and what kind of abs material used? is it strong enough say i want to build a gear how much shear force it can withstand before it breaks. is there tensile, compressive, shear strength datasheet for this abs material?

The extruders all work pretty much the same. There's the 'hot end' which is a small aluminium block that has a heater element and a thermistor inside it. Through this there's a  metal tube which has a small hole (0.3mm or so) at the end. This heats the ABS or PLA filiment to melting point. Behind the hot end is a stepper motor that clamps on the filament to drive it through the hot end.
As far as materials go, you'd have to research the properties of ABS to see it it was suitable for your application. As far as I know, the extrusion and build process doesn't alter ABS in any way (except for melting it of course).

Was going to get a solidoodle, but the waiting list is never ending, and there's so many tales on their forum of people waiting 4 months for their printer...

i finally ended buying one of this... http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/3D-Printer-Aurora-Z605-Replicator-Machine-PLA-ABS-for-3d-printing-DIY-KIT-/161276665770?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item258cd69faa#ht_1636wt_1125
kinda prusa i3 clone, board based on sanguinololu melzi http://www.reprap.org/wiki/Melzi FW is marlin (need modification and re-flash to calibrate). fire the OSHW repetier-host and the slicer, well... with 2kg abs free, first test print output like that, and potentially of many weeks saved just to find a linear bearing or screw drive shaft, imho its worth the money, what do they expect from a DIY kit?

what do you jealous about $500+ printer? :D there are more expensive one out there that i believe can perform better, heh. i'm thinking post-printing touch on the jagged surface is needed, sanding or "heat gun" fondling or somesort, for better result... i guess. :P

I've heard great things about the Rostock printer (and their support is amazing- check their forum!), as well as Kossel and mini Kossel printers.
SeeMeCNC is coming wont with an updated Rostock I believe, and launched the Orion a couple months ago (some $1099 assembled or something).
Delta all the way, baby!

Just can't afford it at the moment... even though I want it.  ;D

Yeah, I could have opened another thread and it probably deserves it's own thread:

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/man-3d-prints-castle-back-garden-using-concrete-printer-he-invented-1459223

The video doesn't show printing the larger structure, seems more like a proof of concept video, but the pictures shows a bigger scale print.
Also on the article it's mentioned that an Slovenian firm will be able to print 144 sq m structures. Also note that a company in China is building 200 sq m structures, but there are more like shells using premade parts

I ordered a QU-BD two up a few weeks ago. It's got pretty good specs for the price,

50 micron resolution (Same as Makerbot)
175x175x125 mm print area

It was something like $380 with the heated bed. Who knows, might be a be a piece of crap but for the price I thought it was worth a shot.
We'll see I guess. For $200 less than the Simple Metal Kit and with double the resolution and a similar build area it seems pretty competitive.
Also uses a fairly common board (The Printrboard I believe) which has lots of support and could easily be upgraded.  :-//

Here's a link if anyone's interested: http://store.quintessentialuniversalbuildingdevice.com/product.php?id_product=145

If you try and take a cat apart to see how it works, the first thing you have on your hands is a nonworking cat.

If you need an affordable 3D printer, you can buy it from 3DStuffMaker. They have the best 3D printers online when compared to price and performance.
