Another Telstra mobile network outage
« on: March 17, 2016, 08:43:48 am »
I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been a Telstra customer since I got my first mobile phone in high school and AMPS was still a thing. I remember back then, pre-paid customers could only receive SMS (not send) and when sending was finally turned on, it was the more amazing thing ever (although I could only really SMS one other friend who happened to have a phone at the time). Calls also cost $1.10 per minute and were timed in 30 second increments.

Fast forward to 2016, where Australia's largest, fastest and most expansive network has had not one but two major outages, nationwide, within two months. Today I was without data and experienced call failures from 1758hrs* to around 1930hrs. One, let alone two failures ever of this nature is just unheard of.

A sign of things to come or is there something seriously wrong with the Telstra network?

* This was the last time I had data tonight until now...

It's not the network, it's the company.
Telstra for some brain dead reason decided long ago, they don't need to be run by engineers, then went further and don't directly employ them.
Most of Telstra's engineer level technical people are contractors.

Look up Warrnambool Exchange Fire for an example of the clusterfuck that is Telstra.
When they did repair it, it took weeks longer than it should, and consisted of raiding other exchanges for spare parts and disused equipment.
The most likely cause of that fire was a 30 year old PC that had been left plugged in.

Telstra is just marketing and management people, everything is so tied up in redtape (theirs not the government's) that a simple repair to a cut cable takes weeks.

They should have just taken out the first 'u' ..... "Telstra Service Tech Gru"

... and given those vehicles to Telstra management.

.... There's also something strangely appealing about the involvement of countless minions.

It's a little broader than that.

A Telstra spokesman said this affected less than 3 per cent of its mobile customers, equivalent to 507,000 users, for about an hour with Victoria and Tasmania the worst-hit states.

http://www.smh.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/telstra-investigating-national-outage-20160322-gno5mi.html#ixzz43bPqOqB2

Apparently it was supposedly fixed within a couple of hours - but there's a storm on social media that has statements of 'bullshit!'

Telstra's internal policy is to offer customers 50% off their bill as a credit. Which I'm happy with. They initially just offered me the free day of data which I argued was useless to me. It's no good offering me free data unless it's at the times I actually want to use it. I'm not going to sit there next Sunday thinking of things to download for the sake of it, I have better things to do.

If it keeps happening, I'll hit them up for another 50% credit, and another... I think it has the potential to get very expensive for Telstra very quickly.
