Title: Any EEVBloggers in Hong Kong ?
Post by: mikeselectricstuff on October 20, 2015, 09:30:36 pm
Long shot - I have a customer in Hong Kong having problems with a custom test jig I built - almost certainly just a bad solder joint on an 0805 resistor or IC pin ( I know which resistor/pin it will be from the symptoms).
If anyone is in Hong Kong & can do some simple repair work please PM me.

And here I was hoping you'd suggest a meetup or something like that. Awesome place, I'll take any excuse to go...

Coincidence... I'm planning to go to HK/Shenzhen as soon as I can afford it. Asap, this year preferably. Don't yet have the cash.

So I'm looking for anyone who's familiar with the place, to ask about cheapest possible accommodation (my needs are very minimal), food, transport, places to see, etc. Also to make a few local phone calls on my behalf as part of the preparation. I'd pay costs.
It's not a business trip, but not exactly tourism either. Still considering whether to explain the reason, or not.

For say a month there, from Sydney Oz, is about Au$3K to 4K a reasonable guess for total cost including airfares and interpreter hire? Airfare return seems to be nearly $1K via asian airlines.
Preferably fly to HK, then cross border to Shenzhen and stay there. That seems to be the cheapest travel combo. I've been to China before.
What's the deal with international driver license for China, and vehicle rental/own there? Do they have 'buy an old car/electric bike then resell' setups for tourists?

Want to ask Frankie but I'm a bit embarrassed to, considering I've never yet bought anything from him. Which is only because I'm usually so poor.

Maybe there should be a 'search by country' option in the memberlist... too bad there's nothing on the internet for that, so it'll have to be coded...

Contacted Franky yet?  ;D

That was my first thought!  ;D

I was there for a few days a year ago in transit to Phuket Thailand.

Buy a rail pass as soon as you get off the plane. It intitles you to unlimited HK train use and a return on the airport expess.
Study the undergound maps http://www.mtr.com.hk/archive/en/services/routemap.pdf (http://www.mtr.com.hk/archive/en/services/routemap.pdf) and understand the transfer stations. Everything is both colour coded and in English, you'll have no problems.
Many in HK are English speaking, often not good but good enough.
China was OK, there were helpful staff and cops in each station if you needed help. Their English was nothing flash but you can make do.
http://shenzen.it/metromap.html (http://shenzen.it/metromap.html)

Depending on where you cross the border there will be queues so plan for that.
Trains are cheap both in HK and Shenzhen but be sure you have the correct currencies.

As for where to stay  :-// we stayed in a posh hotel on the blue (border) line just to make it simple for the day I went to Shenzhen.

You will need a Chinese visa even coming from HK, unless you are HK citizen or having HK green card.
You need a visa to enter China from HK unless you have a Compatriot Pass, or whatever they call them in English these days. Being a HK citizen has nothing to do with visa requirements, although a HK permanent resident gets better visa conditions.
Driving a scooter doesn't require a license, while driving a car does. China does NOT recognize intl driver license. You can get one at local airport or DMV as fast as 1 week, providing you have an Oz driver license. It took me 1 week to get a Chinese driver's license from a US driver's license, from filling paperworks, having computerized test to finally get the license shipped to my place.
How does that work. The rules I have read say you can only drive in China with a China or Belgian driving licence (Belgian licences work due to some ancient bilateral agreement). You can only get a China driving licence if you are a resident in China. People engaged in organised driving tours in China can get some kind of special short term licence. A lot of people in HK get China driving licences,  but that's based on having a Compatriot pass. I would really like to get a China driving licence.

There are some among us who live in Hong Kong. What needs fixing, and where is it?

You are qualified to get a "provisional" driving license in China even without test. Go check out this link: http://wikitravel.org/en/Driving_in_China. (http://wikitravel.org/en/Driving_in_China.)

I think the URL is incorrect as it adds the full stop on the end to the link, showing:

For those wanting to visit Shenzhen you just missed the one this year: http://dangerousprototypes.com/hackercampshenzhen/ (http://dangerousprototypes.com/hackercampshenzhen/)

They even visited the Yihua shop (http://dangerousprototypes.com/2014/08/04/yihua-and-depu-electronics-market-visit/).

Doesn't matter. The original plan was to go mid to late 2016, for electronics tourism/business. But something has come up, that is kind of urgent and only slightly electronics related. General electronics-fun will have to fit in spare time. Sorry can't be specific here; on consideration I think describing the trip purpose could jeopardize chances of success. It's nothing illegal.

Accommodation takes about US$50 per night for an acceptable inn in Shenzhen, while luxury ones such as Marriott or Hilton can easily take $500 for a std suite.
Both are more luxurious  than I want. Something like a boarding house, or private residence room let? Both because I prefer to be more immersed, and second because I do need to cut costs to the bone. Stay likely to be several weeks.  Last time I got a Chinese visa it was for 60 days max.

Heh.. In Manila a cheap hotel was about Au$100 per WEEK. With breakfasts. I forget the cost in Beihai; could look it up.

Yeah, know it. Not a problem.

Thanks, very useful. I think a scooter sounds good. Are they the predominant vehicles there, as in Sth China? (Where virtually no one wears helmets, despite not wearing a helmet apparently being grounds for police fines.)

Quote
Beware, despite Chinese driver licenses are approved in a very strict fashion, people tend to f[censored]k the rule after getting a license, so be very careful.
Road rules? I saw little evidence of such things. Yeah, I know the driving style is totally different to here. A bit intimidating, but I'll manage. You only live 0.936 times.

Quote
Rent a car is possible, and very easy. Some companies will even rent you their car without examining your driver's license, but of course, you will bear all possible consequences and no insurance will apply.
As long as the accidents I cause don't actually involve me. (I found just walking along the footpath in Beihai caused (mild) road accidents, since the sight of a westerner seemed to greatly distract drivers.)

You do not need an interpreter if ...
For my purpose there I do. Some of the time. Not a problem, I can find.

Quote
If you insist on getting an interpreter, get one who can speak Cantonese. In Shenzhen, some native residents don't, or are reluctant, to speak Mandarin.
Yeah, thanks for reminding me, added to list.

Quote
PS. Speaking English in a non English speaking area might need some improvisation and guessing. But it is still doable. I traveled to Japan a couple month ago, and speaking English definitely work (with some minor issues, as expected).

Oh yes, been there. in Beihai I had to find a replacement laptop power supply. Found local small electronics shop, that also repaired stuff. Drew pictures. We found a correct one in their junk box, but the DC cord was broken. More pictures drawing. Got them to let me use their gear to repair it. I don't think they'd ever seen someone splice a coax cable before. Luckily I can draw well enough and fast. So who needs language? Not that I'd want to try philosophy that way.

Oh, and one rule I have: buy a full city road map immediately. Then if lost or to get to places you can just point at it.

Quote
Finally, good luck.
Thanks, definitely need it. Do you want to hear a funny story that is only for email, not even PMs?

Edit #2:
Study the undergound maps http://www.mtr.com.hk/archive/en/services/routemap.pdf (http://www.mtr.com.hk/archive/en/services/routemap.pdf)

http://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/tourist/index.php (http://www.mtr.com.hk/en/customer/tourist/index.php)

Thanks! I would likely be going straight to Shenzhen, so maybe don't need to learn the HK system. Apart from how to get to Shenzhen.

As a long shot:

Contact via email an electronics technical school.  I know there is one there because I had contact with them years ago.

Contact a professor and tell him your situation and offer him a commission to find someone to fix the item.  You are going to have to pay someone to fix it.

I found them to be very friendly and helpful.  Sorry I cannot remember the school, it was on the mainland side.  I think with a little Goggling you could find it, then find electronic classes, then find an electronics professor.

For a cheap stay try searching cheap Indian flop houses.  They have rooms that only have a bed. If you are tired enough you can sleep and I do not remember any bed bugs nor critters, just bring a roll of toilet paper to make the common restroom visit more enjoyable.  If strong smells bother you then forget this advice.  When in HK why would you stay in a hotel room anyway?  I remember the one I stayed in was a short walk around the corner from the most expensive hotel (the one with the Rolls for guests and has been in movies)

Good luck

The term provisional licence in most countries is a licence you need while you are a learner driver. There are usually conditions, like needing to be accompanied by a fully licenced driver, and maybe not being able to drive on major roads. I understand this is what a China provisional licence is like.

Cell coverage, I had no problems anywhere in HK, but go across the border to Shenzhen and no Vodafone coverage.  :palm:

I'd do better homework for that next time.  |O

I will be surprised if anyone in Shenzhen will be attracted by a white, since foreigners are everywhere in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Beihai, on the other hand, is not remotely internationalized as Shenzhen.
20 years ago people in most of China stared at me, because it was so unusual for them to see a white face. Now I would need to go to a really out of the way spot for that to happen. Even in villages off the beaten track people take no notice of me.
