That happens in multi-hundred member blob fights. It's completely screwed and a more modern architecture would be embaressed. It it's day it was revolutionary. Not anymore. |

Played Eve, ended up bittervet. Paying for 3 accounts to multibox for Hilmar et all to just keep trying to flog people for more money. While he dumps Eve online revenue into failed side project after failed side project, while doing below bare minimum to maintain the game. Then Pearl Abyss bought them, and I ran out of motivation to play since they were just going to introduce actual pay to win inevitably. Sure enough just recently I checked in, and you can buy (with real world money) ammo with enhanced performance over normal stuff, and drama over them selling packs with ships in it. Edit: looks like the community berated the devs into submission on dropping the golden ammo/boosters, for now. But how long will it last? And battling devs that want to shit up a game is nowhere near as fun as the game itself. |

I partly agree. I first opened my account in 2008. I have only about 5 years actual play time / subscription time. 4 of those with 2 accounts. It took a whole bunch of game play and effort, some of it quite "grindy" to get to where I am in the game. Back in maybe 2015 when a 7 year old character appeared in local you showed or felt some respect. It was very, very likely they out skilled you and very likely out fitted your ship... very likely you would lose. This let to some basic respect earned by longevity in the game. Respect in Eve if a very valuable currency. Inversely, if you drop into a system which has 4 or 5 players all under a year in game, your choices where to grief them, kill them quickly, or leave them alone. Today that has all changed. A lot of the basic game mechanics have been turned upside down. Today when you land in that same system with what appears to be 3 or 4 "newbies" in it, they can, very, very likely turn out to be "Daddies credit card funded plex junkies" who spend $20-50 dollars or real world money to skill inject and "Plex" their billions in game and come at you with such a blingy ship they win. They wipe out assets you spent possibly weeks or months working on in what was a "Flex with the CC" funded weekend rampage. The same players then quit the game after only having the "came with the pack" 1 month sub. I still have to replace that shit. Other "nerfs" to make the game more open and accessible for < 1 year characters have been the near complete de-racialistion of the empires. It used to be if you started out as Caldari it would be very difficult to operate in, say, Gallente space efficiently. Cross skilling other races and raising your standings across multiple races/factions was a long and arduous, but advantageous effort. Different types of raw materials appeared in different faction/racual space. Blueprints, materials and thus ships of one faction or another were cheap near their origin faction and expense everywhere else. Making trade hauling lucrative and sub 1 billion investment retailing practical. That's all been flattened down now. When they released an expansion that involved stuff for one or other faction which required standings, all the null-sec Plex'ers whined and complained along with the new players that "grinding standings" the old way, running dozens and dozens of missions for the faction was "too long". The zoomers had no iterest and the millenials were drifting away. So they added loads and loads of "gifted standing" missions, so to gain standings with another faction all you gotta do is grind 3 or 4 missions and boom, you get +4 standings with a faction you previously looted and pillaged for 5 years and had "Shoot on sight" standings. Watered down. Raw materials and now distributed only by the security of the systems. Skills can be bought, sold, injected extracted. Longevity in the game has virtual no bearing on abilities or threat level. On login these days they are giving free boosters (Narcotics!) to kids, wrapped in lovely colourful boxes and packaging. I know it's "virtual drugs", but it needs to be marketed to the PARENTs that is what they are. Yes... those same "boosters" etc. are available in packs for real $ on daddies credit card. They are less than 1 step away from $$ bought "loot boxes" and gambling regulations. I expect this incoming in 2024. By 2026 it will be reduced to an online "Arena" style quick fix pay to play tactical space shooter. There will be more players talking about Eve of old than playing it. At the same time. Plex, ISK, Blingy ships and injected skills might make one jealous and might provide a thorn in ones side on occasion, but usually they burn out and leave the game anyway. That or get sucked up into one of the mega alliances and play slow motion blob wars costing thousands of real world dollars everyday and leave the more casual alone in high/low sec. It does however introduce the mafia to the game. I'm not joking either. RMT is becoming an increasingly serious issue. (real money trading) within the game. The only reason I think it has yet to be shut down by regulatory folks is that it hasn't hit any kind of scale and it doesn't look like the game would support enough revenue to do so. It doesn't stop wanna-be cyber mafia from running multi-thousand a month operations. Their income tax people might, but the regulatory people aren't interested in that level. It's not even enough to smurf and layer let alone place. The placement market in eve (to turn ISK back into cash) is the main bottle neck. ISK farmers used to sell characters with full wallets for $. CCP closed that up by charging $15 to sell a character! These manifest in game by player operating trading mega structures. They offer next to free "top tier" facilities, public stations and markets and critically... nearly 0% tax. That nearly 0% tax in player structures means that EVERYONE with Plex, injectors or other "bought with real $" items will flock to these stations to sell them on the market there. The "Non-Player Station" markets all now have 2.5 to 10% sales tax. If you just spent $50 on Plex, you really don't want to piss 5-10% of it away in fake virtual sales tax to get your fake virtual ISK. The volume of ISK and trades going through these systems, means the 0.5% tax they do charge nets them a small (in game) fortune in daily income. They then start buying plex and game time with these profits and then selling that plex, skills and game time on websites out of game for real $. (the Placement). Of course this is "forbidden" by game rules, but it happens anyway and the game owners CCP have no motivation to stop them as they are net profiting from it too. In the game this of course attracts attention. These structures are hard to take down, especially in high-security, but not impossible. There are many large scale mercenary outfits in Eve would take that contract in a heartbeat... and they do. So the in game protection rackets start. We want 200 Bil a month + 0% tax for our alliance or we let the goons in to pop your Citadel. It's a fairly creepy place to go. 1 jump from Dodixie are a few examples. 1 Jump from safest highsec and we have Goonswarm and Horde people in cyno frigates and scouts pipelining back to the nearest lowsec cap drop point. Jumpfrighters 4 jumps from DD etc. A huge amount of bright red and flashy ships with -9 security status who normally don't come to high sec. A real shit hole of a band lands. You are free to use the services and free to take advantage of some of the market manipulation they throw down, like selling ammo at 1/10th market price just to squeeze other T2 ammo makers out of the business while at a loss, but rich enough not to care. This is eve. There is still plenty of game play left below all that high and might towers of Eve stuff. The new abyssals stuff is pretty cool. The low-sec only mining ores and much higher value mining anomoloy drops makes some interesting game play there now too. I really don't know how long Eve can go on, but I agree, CCP are not helping it much. There does seem to be a core Eve team continually working on it, but the content is "thin" themed reskins for events and maybe 1 new game mechanic or expansion a year. A game which is STILL making a huge profit and retaining it's player base so long, is receiving so little love, we all fear that CCP will just drive it into the ground in a "in game purchase" "pay to win" frenzy that just won't be worth grinding at, when the grinding long termers leave the game, so does all the ship manufacturing etc.). So there will be nothing to pay to log in an enjoy, unless they start printing NPC ships and ammo more. Still nothing, yet, comes close. For a while Elite Dangerous twinkled some hope, but it quickly faded. Some people parallel WoW and what not, but honestly... no. just no. They aren't even chalk and cheese! |
