Anyone else, seeing small images from forum, not appearing i.e. mostly text only?

I've seen a report in Server Error messages, with one user with the same symptoms.

Basically, things like the user icons, have disappeared.  It seems to make the forum look weird, blank and basic.

Happens from time to time, I guess the server struggling with demand or a caching issue.   :-//   It usually comes back an hour later or so.

Yes I see this now and then. For instance the online indicator will be shown as text. Usually a refresh of the page fixes it.

Yep, today that's what we have. Refreshing the page does work, on some forum pages, but not on all of them. I wasn't sure it wasn't just a location-dependent problem, but you guys confirm that it's affecting others.

Probably a server issue. IIRC, the http server is nginx, and frankly I've witnessed recurring issues with nginx compared to Apache. Not meant to be a flamewar of any kind, just a note. I personally would not use nginx as a http server. Just too finicky IMHE. Maybe it has nothing to do with nginx this time though, so in this case, consider it just a random rant.

Disabling my add-blocker plus for this site cleared the problem for me.
(This solved for third party attached image links within messages...)

Thanks.
After about 2 or 3, refreshes, it finally worked again, at least for this page.

Because I thought it was still faulty, I didn't think of trying that.

EDIT:
BUT after making this post, they all disappeared again (the users icons).
So, presumably there is something which needs fixing.

I'm also using an ad blocker.  It's weird.  Sometimes I refresh it and the user icons appear, other times they don't.  A different web-browser (I think, which doesn't have add blocking), seems to show the pages, just fine.

I'm confused as to if the fixes, should be at my end, on the EEVblog server, or if I wait a few days, the problems will disappear.

Edit: Rewritten, and status updated.

Someone in another thread, is saying similar.  I.e. That adblock-plus and a new forum advert are badly interacting with each other, is the gist of how I interpreted it.

It just started happening with me too as of this evening, and yes, I use an ad blocker. Although I kind of like the simplistic view.

Yep definitely AdblockPlus in my case. If it wasn't for the animated gifs in the header I wouldn't mind so much but they smack of the bad old days of Flash in websites.

Little more looking and it is Adblock Plus at fault. I haven't looked at the changelog but yesterdays 'update' has broken SMF's image handling and maybe some of the CSS is getting blocked leading to none or sketchy image issues.

Once in a while the forum webpage loads in all text format looking like something from the 1990's...

A refresh or two and it comes back.  I get the sense the server is overwhelmed, but I don't think I'm in the busiest time zone (early AM EST).

I disabled my Adblock Plus, by clicking on its red icon, towards the top of the browser, and flipping the 'This Website' enable / disable slider.  The forum then does indeed seem to be working, fine.

You seem to be saying updated on the February 6th.

But, it is now 7th March (depending on time zone).

AdBlock Plus is not a good recommendation anymore anyway.
I would suggest taking a look at uBlock Origin. I have this running for a couple of years now, and have rarely any problems with it. The forum shows up fine with it enabled.

I have the same problem with U-Block Origin.  So it looks like the site is now getting stuff from different servers as of yesterday, and the ad blockers block them.  So if you were Dave, would you fix this, or not?

Interesting, so then it is the block lists that are the issue, and not the addon itself.
Would you mind sharing the lists you have subsribed to?

Mine are essentially the default filters:

All the uBlock Origin filters
EasyList
EasyPrivacy
"Online Malicious URL Blocklist"
"Peter Lowe’s Ad and tracking server list"

I never made any concious decision of enabling or disabling any of these.

EasyList and EasyPrivacy are as far as i know also supported by Adblock. Maybe there are other lists that are available for both that are causing a problem?

EDIT: Speak of the devil :D Now the avatars and country flags are gone...

Same problem here. If you enable the Protocol logging you'll see something like that (attached picture). My guess would be that the images are located in a "comm" folder. My guess would be that uBlockOrigin assumes to contain commercial stuff.

Edit: Erm, sorry, that's actually Commercial stuff Dave hosts on his server... And there is nothing else in the Network-Log that could indicate that th eimages are filtered out.

Haven't spend too much time to fiddle around in the uBlock filter settings to circumwork the filter. Which seems to be a build in filter.

- I dunno if he has any easy way of fixing it anyway.
- If so, not completely sure what his incentive would be indeed.

Today I'm seeing lots of missing stuff, icons, avatars, most images are not showing up. Sometimes they come back when refreshed, but I haven't seen any user avatars all day. It doesn't appear to be uBlock doing it. That and Noscript are all I have, no other adblockers.

That is getting somewhat silly then.  That could mean, the forum server(s), need work or improvement or to stop using the problematic advert system (I don't mean stop all adverts, just the one or more, that is causing these issue(s) ).

But I don't really properly understand the wider implications of this issue, or what causes it.  So I might not be giving the best of advice.

It is a bit like trying to figure out, if your new project, doesn't work, because of hardware or software problems, which can be tricky to get to the bottom of.
Similarly, I'm not sure who to blame, the forum server(s), or the adblockers and similar.

Ditto! It started (for me) sometime yesterday - even the oscilloscope icons on the main page do not show. Sometimes a refresh will bring them back but I've not seen avatars or images on any posts since yesterday. I am using adblock, but not, as far as I know, on this site (one of the few!)

:palm: :-DD What year is it my Brain is mush......

More likely then I guess something in the filter list is causing an issue. In a long term use of Adblockers I have never seen any of them comprehensively break a site like this. Everywhere else I have browsed including a non SMF Forum has been fine.

I did log a report to AdblockPlus for what it is worth too :-//

Yes, apart from the sites that deliberately block access when they detect an adblocker, this forum is pretty much one of the rare sites that I've had similar problems with when using adblockers.

I can't really figure why it would block images that are definitely not in the blocking filters, at least as far as I can tell, that may be hidden somewhere. Now possibly adblockers mess with the caching parameters of the forum or maybe it's even on a server level. (That would allow me to have gripes with nginx again ;D ) The fact images come back (sometimes) when you refresh the pages does suggest this is related to some caching issue.
