Come to think of it, aren't the ads here self hosted?  In theory they shouldn't be getting blocked, unless the ad blockers are detecting it because of their size and then blocking other images too?  The ads here were never annoying and don't contain spyware like google ads do, so don't care about seeing them.   If that's the case then whitelisting the site may very well be the only way as it's not really an issue with the site at that point.

Edit: Adding eevblog.com and www.eevblog.com in the whitelist seems to have fixed the issue, and also the cosmetic filtering option others mentioned.

The three (currently) banner adds I had to add manually to Adblock Plus as items to block.

The issue really seems to be that somehow or someone has added EEVBlog to one of the SHARED data files used by multiple Blockers.

They are self hosted, but no, it doesn't mean they can't be filtered, otherwise adblockers would not work at all. Read posts above to see what filters are being applied to this site.

These ones seem to be OK (ublock list):
Code: [Select]
eevblog.com##[href*="offers"]
eevblog.com##[src*="banner"]
||eevblog.com/images/*.gif$image

One of these seems to cause the problem (easylist, found by RoGeorge):
Code: [Select]
eevblog.com###text-49
eevblog.com##[data-pagespeed-url-hash][onload^="pagespeed"]
eevblog.com##[href^="http://s.click.aliexpress.com/"]

Interesting that it made the built in list, I would not have figured as this is kind of a niche site, ex: it's not like it's Facebook or something.

I saw just before with "Offline" text next to the profile name. Not in this thread though, it seems fine.
Happens form tiem to time, I think it has something to do with the dual database system or something.
gnif would know.

This issue with EasyList should be remembered because it has happened before and multiple pages of posts and a lot of confusion could be avoided.

My AdblockPlus is blocking only one item.
Still all icons will disappear.

Banner ad is also a bit slow.
Maybe it's an iframe.

I read that some lazy loading thingy can do stuff.
But even if that is so then why all icons and all pictures.

Well, I took a look at things with the AdBlockPlus debug feature on and then added this to my filter list: ##||eevblog.com/forum/Themes/*
All the things that are vanishing seem to be part of the Theme, and the ## says allow this regardless of previous rules.
Sample size is still small, but so far it seems to be working.

This seems to be working for me.  I have some custom eevblog filters that still work fine and all the graphics and icons show up as expected.

But how did eevblog get on the naughty list in the first place?  When I look on the Easylist forum, there's no mention of eevblog.

Anyone else having problems seeing country flags? I'm seeing them around 20% of the time with no changes to adblocker settings inbetween.
Best Regards, Chris

(Firefox)

Just a moment after my earlier message all started working.
Can't say how long it lasted.

Now directory pages are working but content pages are not, it's also solid, yes or no, no hiccups.
Pins on right inside a subject cells are not included, but seems also that they are burned.

So basically if you use a 3rd party addon there is a chance it can brake the use of websites, even ones you love. This is of course nothing new.

I suspect one of the other tinfoil hat types has reported some images and links as adverts/SPAM and the eevblog site has ended up on it.

Nevermind, I don't mind adverts on here, the forum is free to use after all. Plus I can't be arsed with blockers these days (stopped using them >15yrs ago) they only seem to cause issues either blocking stuff you want to get to or from justing being a bloatware full of security holes.

Might go back to Lynx, far superior browsing experience.

Yes, country flags can disappear.
If I re-enable the adbocker for this site, the country flags (most of the time), disappear.  Along with the users small picture icon (if applicable for that user), and other small images, the site tries to display.

N.B.  Increasingly these days.  Adblockers are automatically enabled and built into, an increasing number of web-browsers, anyway.

It is not just about blocking adverts.  I worry, about malicious (intentional or by accident), computer damaging (e.g. virus's, trackers etc), things that might be in some adverts.

As mentioned in another thread  https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/eevblog-was-added-to-the-blocked-websites-in-easylist/msg4754504/#msg4754504  .

It seems to have been fixed now.

I forced my adblocker, to update the easylist (actually all lists), and it seems to be working just fine now, showing all images, with the adblocker fully running.

Is this really a fix?  Easylist has more eevblog entries than before.

Code: [Select]
eevblog.com###text-49
eevblog.com##[href*="https://jlcpcb.com/"]
eevblog.com##[href*="https://saving.em.keysight.com/"]
eevblog.com##[href^="http://s.click.aliexpress.com/"]
eevblog.com##img[src^="https://www.eevblog.com/images/comm/eevblog_banner_"]

I don't understand how these got in there in the first place.  There's no mention of eevblog on the Easylist forum.

This is the first time I've questioned my adblocker (AdBlockPlus).  I'm not happy that it's so hard to override entries in their lists.

Well, it at least seems to be functioning, (showing small images and icons), for me, unobstructed, now (after updating the lists, via my adblocker).

Presumably, those remaining artifacts (of EEVblog), are part of the detection and hiding of unwanted (if you are using an adblocker), adverts and/or trackers.

It would be interesting to know, how and why, those entries got into the EasyList.  But, maybe to save time and hassle, or to keep the complainers identities secret, or some other reason(s).  They don't allow easy access to how things came about.

I only recently heard of EasyList, and still don't really know that much about it.

One question that comes to mind.  If we as users, click 'block element' (typically on an annoying image), on our adblocker.  Does the fact we did that, get sent back to adblocker / EasyList, and cause them to do anything with the information?

It's fixed. I just manually updated Adblock's filter lists and right after that the issues went away.  :-+
I told my friends I could teach them to be funny, but they all just laughed at me.

Not really.  I realize I'm talking about an adblocker here, but now, all the banner ads are being filtered out and I have no control over that unless I exempt eevblog from all filtering.  But, there are a few items that I want to filter.  It's one thing to deprive some megacorp of some advertising revenue, but I don't want to deprive Dave of any source of income.

In another message, it was suggested that a line could be added to your personal filters that would allow eevblog.  Unfortunately, that fix blocked other personal filters from functioning.  Basically, I haven't been able to find a solution that has the granularity I want.

Just for interest Adblock Plus was working fine with Easylist re enabled as of yesterday and the top banner adds were hidden just as it used to be. When I removed the custom block/hiding of them they re appeared as you should expect.

Until at a minimum the rolling yellow peril that is JLPCB is un giffed and toned way down then they are going back on the custom block list. Overall the two add blocks in the banner are way to much vertical real estate on each page change.

That one is really annoying. Reminds of 90's <blink> html tag.
