Title: Anyone knows how to get to into W10 without Admin creds?
Post by: AcHmed99 on September 12, 2016, 02:19:20 pm
I set-up an outlook email account on my sisters new W10 Laptop and in order to use it Windows wanted me to get a live account. I just copied the username and password for the account on notepad and saved in on her desktop. I do not remember what I scribbled for the password. Little did I know that this account that was just supposed to be for email is now the admin account and the password for it is needed to log onto the computer.

I have no option when logging on to switch accounts to the original account, no options to log on without ADMIN creds all safe mode recovery tools will not work without ADMIN password. Is there any way to either get the txt file with password off the desktop or get an option to boot without admin pass?

You can access all files using an Ubuntu live stick if disk encryption was not enabled. I think. Secure boot might throw some additional roadblock though. (you can always pull the disk)

Then you can backup your files but need to reinstall the entire OS again right?
Perhaps you can then modify the registry and get in again, have a look at the findings if you google "logging into windows 10 without password"

If the W10 account is linked to Microsoft cloud, then you can recover the account online.

If it's not a cloud account then you can boot to windows 10 recovery cmd console and replace utilman.exe with cmd and then use net user command on boot to replace the password or make another account. Search "utilman.exe" and lost password. Alternatively usb boot programs available that will do it as well.

Another alternative is to do another windows install and then take ownership of files using security tab.

The sticky keys/utilman trick is the way I do it too. That way you can create a new user/remove password with the net user command.

Get a copy of the latest Hiren's BootCD
Boot from it and reset the admin password.
No need to reinstall the OS

+1. Make some Flash drive or CD from which you can boot, be it windows PE or other OS. Once booted, browse the folders, open text file and write down the password.

It is really not that difficult to understand. You set up a Windows account which logs in into the PC and Onedrive, your email account, etc. Same idea Apple uses. You also don't have to use a Windows account, I just set up a latte Panda that way Friday. Take a few minutes to learn about it, it is a lot easier than taking hours to fix your mistakes.

No need to reinstall the OS

That utility doesn't work with windows 10 anymore unfortunately.

It gave me no option other then to get a live account in order to use her email. I clicked on set-up new account created her email name and pass then it said in order to use the email account you must get a live account. This was done through outlook create new account.

Yes, I if you want a email account through Gmail, live, Yahoo then you have to set up an account with them. You don't have to use a MS account to log in to log into your Live email though. Nothing 'happened' to the original account, you just changed its credentials for logging in.

Writing down the user name/password in a text file on the account the credentials is for is sort of like writing down your safe password and locking it in the safe (something I probably would do :) ). Since you have the information in a text file, boot the machine with via a boot CD and locate the text file.

Once you assign a Microsoft account to a user profile W8+ will suggest you use it as login, at which point you'd get access to the nowadays commonly expected online storage of settings / preferences feature and automatic sync between your machines.

It's pretty well described and you can say no to keep the account local, but this looks mostly like a plain old "click next first, read later" incident.

My recollection, and maybe it's been changed, is that with Windows 8 on Microsoft did their best to make it appear that an online account with them was the only way to run the set up. I would expect the same or worse with 10.
