Anything interesting in bits of mass spectrometer support gear?
« on: November 01, 2021, 08:30:16 pm »
Hi guys,

On a local trade forum I noticed bits of a mass spectrometer system, including a QMH 400-5 ( https://www.fe.infn.it/u/barion/docs/QMA/QMG700/RFgenerator.pdf ) being sold, as I understand it a bit above scrap value. Included are some of the photos of the devices available.

Ideally, someone who could really use the devices in their proper application would take these devices. But if no one takes them... well... might as well take them and see what's inside. The alternative as I understand it is the scrapyard. edit: And there's a time limit, till the end of this week.

My question is whether or not there are any particularly interesting things inside this sort of thing?

Before anyone asks: Yes, it would be a shame to tear them down for a few misc parts, but what's the alternative? I may keep them for some time, but the damn things are huge, probably weigh a ton, so not for long if I don't find an application for them.

Thanks,

David

Actually, I did search on the RF Gen, has a (vacume I assume) waveguide, and numerous safety warnings.
My experience (Systron Donner) was with self contained Helium Leak detection where a Quality Control Tech would spray helium from a wand, up and down some piping / housings.
The mass spec. unit was portable in that it was huge but could be (barely) wheeled thru a doorway.
So, it was specialized for helium, with a (needle moving coil) type meter, front and center. You spray, and cross your fingers...no wooooo tone or meter movement meant your welds we're good.
The devices were gas pressured fire / overheat detectors.
Hey...where's your vacume stuff: pumps gauges, lines and all kinda valves ?
Maybe package as 'portion of a system', plus an older PC Tower, and a...old CRT monitor...oh wait, that's just some junk, behind the Mass Spectrometer System...
