ANZAC Day
« on: April 25, 2012, 06:34:02 pm »
On this day in 1915 British, French, Australian and New Zealand troops landed in Gelibolu, today's Turkey, not far from where I live.
The cost of the landings was 130.000 lives lost from both sides. 130.000 lives lost for no reason.
Let us remember them and let us remember the lesson they thought us - the value of peace.

Those heroes that shed their blood
    And lost their lives.
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
    Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours.
    You, the mothers,
Who sent their sons from far away countries
    Wipe away your tears,
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
    And are in peace
After having lost their lives on this land they have
    Become our sons as well.

                    Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
                    Lieutenant-Colonel of the defendant forces.
Later, founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Indeed.
And hope that never happens again.
The sad part is that the British ships almost made it through, and therefore not require the Gallipoli landing at all. But they didn't know that at the time.

That's the important part. Turkish and Aussie troops had both worked it out, nearly 100 years ago, yet as a species we've been pretty poor at learning from their experiences.

War seem to be one cock up after another. Not not sure if the winner is the side that makes the most cock ups or the least.
