Binge watching
« on: December 27, 2018, 11:55:33 pm »
Currently binge watching "mikeselectricstuff" YT channel. Any "must see" videos recommendations? I watched the FLIR teardown which was so deep, my brain hurt, and the debunking the hydrogen charger pile-o-poo..love the LED stuff as well.

It's hard to recommend videos without knowing what you want. But I would say Big Clive and Fran Blanche are similar to what you're watching but with a little less advanced talk most of the time. Conversely, if you want advanced talk, take a look at Micah Elizabeth Scott, just keep in mind she's one of the smartest women in the electronics world.

Thanks all, I've been subbed to Big Clive and Fran too..I'am into everything, love to learn. I was teasing myself about watching the iPod reverse engineering, but I used to repair and place iDevice screens (iDeviceGuy on eBay) and don't want to watch it and go back down a new rabbit hole thinking I can now even replicate the LCDs myself...lol. I watched so many of Mikes vids already and I gotta say, though he talks a bit too fast for my' American English' ear sometimes, I love the channel. Watching his playlists in video order..some of his LED builds are amazing and inspiring...the 'tricks and tips' are a 'must watch' for everyone and deserve there own playlist ( though he would have to go snatch clips from almost everyone of his videos to make it complete).

Although: I suppose, if I had to be narrow, I would like to learn more about using a logic analyzer and how to read the outputs with a scope...I don't have a scope with the function built in, though I could hack my Rigol...and I am about to the the Analog Disco 2, once they verify my student profile so I can save a few bucks. So if anyone has recommendations toward that end, even if not through Mike's channel, that would be greatly appreciated. I watched all of Dave's vid's on the topic, like how to use the Arduino as a TV remote..

I will check out Micah Elizabeth Scott for sure, thank you for the recommendation.

Note: I subbed to 'scanlime' and will check for more with her name attached.

Ran through a bunch of Mike's videos. Now I'm off to "Patrick Hood-Daniel" and their 'Newbie Hack' fun. I bought a few his custom breakout STM32F kits a while back (as a thanks for doing what he does) and need to go back through the programming. I got lazy and have been using the Arduino IDE and need to get back to basics. If any one has links to other great STM32F references (or books or App Notes, or anything of the sort) I am again, much obliged.

All good suggestions, ScanLime is a complete time sink, so much information, but man, you can loose hours!  Worth it though!

Julian Ilett has some good content, Andreas Spiess, GreatScott, Kevin Darrah, etc etc, oh and some odd Aussie bloke called Dave something or other  :-DD

Seriously though, as others have said, depends what you're into, if you are into smart homes for example you have superhousetv and MK Smarthouse to name a few.

Jeri Ellsworth is another good one for electronics.
Up and Atom and TheHappieCat have some good content relating to computer science.
MsMadLemon is good for those into retro computing.
The Signal Path is great for those into RF wizardry.
Knurlgnar24 is unmatched for power inverter teardowns.
M.C. Pletcher and subcooledheatpump are great for DIY refrigeration.

Moving on to more mechanical stuff but very relevant to DIY electronics, there are quite a few nice ladies who'll show you how to do it - 3x3Custom, Anne of All Trades, April Wilkerson, Barb Makes Things, Becky Stern, Blitz City DIY, Darbin Orvar, Estefannie Explains It All, Greylight May, Laura Kampf, Living to DIY with Rachel Metz, Maker Melissa's Lab, Naomi Wu, and The Minimalist Maker.
That's a long list so I suggest starting with Laura Kampf for learning how to make small masterpieces (e.g. project enclosures) with common shop tools.
