App Note/DataSheet Humor..........
« on: November 29, 2018, 11:15:22 pm »
Post up your favorite app note and data sheet humor.  Writing technical documents can get pretty tedious so it always makes me smile when I see that an author tossed in something funny.

Lots of you will already know about the humor of Jim Williams:

Here are another couple examples I've stumbled upon:

From "Stability analysis of voltage-feedback opamps"
http://www.ti.com/lit/an/sloa020a/sloa020a.pdf
"When the loop gain approaches minus one, or to express it mathematically 1∠180°, equation 5 approaches infinity because 1/0⇒∞. The circuit output heads for infinity as fast as it can using the equation of a straight line.  If the output were not energy limited, the circuit would explode the world, but it is energy limited by the power supplies so the world stays intact."

From "AN1375, See What You Can Do with CTMU - Microchip Technology"
http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/appnotes/ctmu%2001375a.pdf
Two of the "really complex applications" for this part are "Solving World Hunger" and "Bring About World Peace"

I wish I could find it online, no luck so far, but I remember a colleague at a long-ago job had a data sheet for a National Semiconductor "Odor-I/O" device tacked onto his wall. It was done up in the exact style of an NS data sheet, totally brilliant.

Sometimes they don't just slip it in, it is the whole thing.

Sometimes that kind of humour just isn't understood:

Long time ago, I wrote some technical manual in German language. There was an chapter about examples, the German word is "Beispiel". Anyway, it's a common joke to say "zum Bleistift" instead of "zum Beispiel" - so I was in a mood an wrote "Bleistifte" instead of "Beispiele" for the chapters header. Quite some time later, I got hold of the English translation, just to find a chapter "Pencils" (which is the correct translation of "Bleistifte"). Never heard of anyone noticing that, but I'm sure no native English speaker would understand "Pencils" as the headline to an chapter regarding examples.

Not sure if it's exactly humor, but you have to wonder who approved this Figure 6-1.

Not in a data sheet, but I have seen Kilroy looking over the outer block outline of schematics. And over some of the circuit traces.
