Apple "AirTag" as redundancy for lost/crashed drone
« on: October 05, 2023, 12:23:48 am »
Had idea - "affix AirTag to drone" - suggested to friend (reductive reasoning to me, not science for rocket!) - friend on FaceTime laugh to me, says to me "My insurance replaces it" - I say "Your insurance doesn't replace all your footage, doesn't it!" - friend reply "DJI will replace it, and app say last known location"

Friend have "answer" for everything, so I Google it (hung up on him, as telling me I am idiot, and "DJI service never goes offline")  :palm: :palm: :palm: :palm: - Google kinda agrees, on my side, people do this.

Any person thinks as I?

Depends where you intend to fly your drone. If it crashes in a remote location where no people with Apple phones walk past it, your AirTag will not help.

AirTags only work when in range of iDevices.  If you crash your drone in the middle of nowhere, you'll never find it, because unless a hiker (with an iPhone, with a data connection) walks past it, it'll never be pinged.

Also, as I discovered, they're not that rugged.  One of my stopped working after a 1.5m drop onto concrete, even with the battery replaced.  So I could imagine a drone crash could break it.

Apple ID and FindMy location tracking may not be reliable in the Russian Federation anymore. Due to the 'special war', state officials and employees are banned from using Apple products including iPhones. So you may have to wait a long time to find your beloved drone, even if goes down over Red Square.
