As usual with vague questions like this, the answer is that it depends.  What noise, what amplitude and frequency will determine the technique to use.  Ferrites are not the panacea they appear to be.  They should be used with discretion and awareness of their limitations.

”General data transfer” is a meaningless statement, since data transfer is the core feature of a data cable.

- “Do I need to add salt to my dinner?”
— “How should I know? It depends on the dish. What is it?”
- “Oh, you know, just general food.”

USB-C itself can mean a bunch of things: it can be USB 3, or just USB 2, for various power levels, various lengths, and then the environment it’s gonna be used in. And I’m sure there are more factors that affect the need for a ferrite.

As long as you don't want to do EM compliance testing for product conformance declaration, you don't need a ferrite on your cable. Usually they are added to lower emissions when it comes to product compliance testing.
If you have issues with interferences coupled to to cable, a simple ferrite most probably won't help. You'd need a better cable and better shielding.
