Are these the same encoders from Mouser?
« on: December 23, 2023, 12:46:12 am »
I have a mouse from 2008 that is discontinued but due to a physical disability, it's the one and only mouse I can use, so Have to keep repairing the same 4 mouse I have and they sell for a lot on eBay, so I have to keep these going.

I replace the encoders as they go bad. Once they start jumping around when I'm scrolling, I have to replace it. I've tried other tricks, but they don't seem to work.

I bought these encoders from Mouser years ago and they work, then I bought another 100 a few days ago, and they look different. I used the same parts # from before, but as you can see one has Encoder says "Alps D" and the other says "Alps Y" and the color in the back is also different

Are these the same? Will it work? I can't afford to break one of my mice

That's the exact same MPN and both from Mouser (so I highly doubt any of these could be non-genuine Alps).
The letter is probably just indicative of the year of production, batch, or something like that.

You can have a look at the whole range of this series of encoders: https://tech.alpsalpine.com/e/products/category/encorder/sub/03/series/ec10e/
and see if there may be a difference worth noting (and supposing that Mouser may have sent the wrong reference among these.)
In any case, there's no harm possible. All of these 3-pin encoders, even from other manufacturers, have the same pinout and each A,B,C pin have similar functions, it's just switches.
All that could change would be the number of pulses per turn and whether it has detents or not.

Can I use any other type of encoder? These ones break way too easy. Maybe I should find an encoder that is smooth without the detents? It's  what breaks on these. When you move the wheel once forward, sometimes it goes back and my eyes can't process that, making me dizzy
