Are we living in 1984?

What is really sinister is your YouTube search results will be totally different from mine. They say this is because each person's results are tailored to the kind of things they watch, and that can be good. Watch some technical videos and you are offered more. That's nice. The snag is it puts each of us in a bubble. The key thing that differentiates us is how much we realise (or perhaps care) that our search results are tailored to our bubble, and whether we go anonymous from time to time to see what the generic search results might be.

Advertisers are usually pretty good at ensuring their dollars route their ads to the maximum eyeballs. However, its amazing how if you work for company X, you get presented with ads for the products and services of X all day long, wherever you go on the internet, and the management of X think everyone on the planet is getting the same exposure to those ads.

For sure, those dictators would only have dreamt of current technology (and its widespread use), and would have been able to do much more. We now have everything at disposal for an almost perfect dictatorship. And yet, we seem to believe human societies have become so wise and ethical that they will never use all those tools for such nasty endeavors. Everyone, of course, is free to believe in whatever they like.

Spot on. There is already a couple of powerful dictatorship who have made themselves presidents for life. Both silence their adversaries - one by poisoning them, the other by imprisoning those who "spread rumours". Actually the latter is the worst, because he uses technology to censor the truth from the proletariat and grades them based on the level of control they comply to... reminiscent of 1984, Brave New World and a prophetic episode of Black Mirror called Nosedive.

People are fundamentally the same now as they have been throughout history. Whilst there are mostly good unselfish people around, there are evil people with a lust for power (and often wealth) who get to the top and need to brainwash the population and use fear to maintain power. Rarely are evil leaders ever brought to justice.

Fun music history fact. Marc Hunter got fired for using the word when speaking to the audience.

Marc Hunter was also a bit of a DH.
